Chicago Public Schools is now hiring substitute teachers for the 2020-2021 school year. Whether you’re a recent college graduate looking to get on a career path or a retired educator, substitute teaching offers a stable and meaningful job opportunity. Full-time substitute teachers in CPS (three or more days per week) receive long-term school placements, a steady paycheck, full healthcare benefits, paid holidays, and more. Requirements include a bachelor’s degree in any field and a substitute teaching license, which takes less than one week to obtain. Substitute teachers may also live outside the city of Chicago.

STEP 1:
Apply for substitute license with Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE)

Order of Events/Timeline:

  • Obtain two official copies of your college transcripts (One for ISBE, one for CPS)
  • Complete ISBE application online ($50 is needed to process your application)

Average time to obtain a license from ISBE once all documents are submitted: 1-2 Weeks

STEP 2:
Apply for CPS Substitute Employment Opportunities

Order of Events/Timeline:

  • Candidates first must complete online application via CPS taleo portal
  • Eligible applicants will be invited to a virtual interview within a 2 week window
  • Within 3 business days of virtual interview, candidates will be informed of their status

STEP 3:
Upon Invitation, Complete Onboarding Process

Order of Events/Timeline

  • Complete onboarding tasks within CPS taleo portal
  • Complete fingerprinting request ($50)
  • Complete TB test ($20)
  • Complete Drug test ($30)
  • Schedule virtual meeting with CPS staffing services office to go over I-9 eligibility documents

Average time to complete: 1-2 Weeks

Substitute Teacher candidates must have a current and valid Illinois State Board of Education Substitute Teacher License to teach or substitute teach in order to apply. Candidates who hold only a paraprofessional license, school counselor, and/or career and technical educator endorsement are required to obtain a substitute teaching license. Special Education Classroom Assistant and Substitute Teacher Assistant candidates must have a current and valid Illinois State Board of Education Paraprofessional License in order to apply.
