A Message from the Principal

Courtenay Language Arts Center is a neighborhood school located in the Uptown neighborhood. We prioritize an education for students focused on the whole child through building critical thinking, collaboration, and discourse skills. Courtenay is rated Strong in the Creative Schools Certification for the Arts, offers a Gold Level PreK program, K-8th grade classrooms, and classrooms offering Significantly Modified Curriculum w/ Moderate Supports. At Courtenay, we offer students an inclusive environment with a focus on Core Curriculum in Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Social-Emotional Learning. Our students have daily classes focused on music, visual arts, physical education, or performing arts. Courtenay offers 1:1 technology using iPads/Chromebooks. All of our K-5th grade and Cluster (K-8th) classrooms are equipped with Promethean Boards. In addition to our classroom spaces, we have a Curiosity Classroom donated by the Children’s Museum of Chicago, a Snoozelen Room offering sensory experiences for students, a science lab, a NEW playground with universal access, auditorium, gymnasium, separate cafeteria, and more! Our after school programming offers students a variety of academic and enrichment programs free to families including English as a Second Language, Dance, sport programming, and rotating additional classes by quarter. We have partnerships with Community in Schools, University of Illinois, YOU Parent Workshops, Design Dance, Navy Pier Children’s Museum, Alternatives, Trellus Behavioral Health, Becoming A Man (BAM), and many others!
