End of Week Message: Enjoying Spring While Planning for Summer

Dear CPS Colleagues, Families, and Supporters,

As we shared with you last week, CPS has now released next year's school budgets to our principals. We are excited to be using a new funding model that will better meet the needs of all students, no matter the type, size, or location of their schools.  

In previous years, funds were granted to schools largely based on their number of students. Now, while enrollment is still a factor, our budgets are tailored much more closely to the unique needs of each school. We’ve started by giving a set number of positions and resources to every school. Then, we add more funding based on what the students in each school need. This funding model is both more equitable and more transparent, and it sets a standard for every student to receive a high-quality education in whatever school they attend. Despite a challenging budget environment, next year’s school budgets will continue critical funding for the programs and strategies that are helping our students recover from the COVID-19 pandemic—including more teachers and interventionists, expanded Out-of-School-Time and summer programs, and high-dosage tutoring in reading and math through our District’s landmark Tutor Corps Program.

At the moment, our principals are hard at work finalizing their individual school budgets for next year. In early May, schools will submit those budgets to the District, and later in the spring, CPS will release our full budget proposal for approval by the Board of Education. We will continue to keep families and staff informed about next year's budget as we move throughout the process.

Attend the 2nd-Annual Mental Health Summit  

The last two months of school can be very exciting, with end-of-year ceremonies, events, and celebrations filling up our calendars. But it can also be a stressful time, especially for our high school students who are cramming for final exams, looking for summer jobs, and making big decisions about their futures.

I urge our high school students who are feeling that pressure to consider attending tomorrow’s CPS Mental Health Summit. Held at Malcolm X College, this will be a day focused on self-care, relaxation techniques, and helpful conversations on managing stress and avoiding burnout. The event is completely free of charge, and both breakfast and lunch will be provided. 

Tomorrow’s 2nd-Annual Mental Health Summit is also open to CPS counselors, social workers, and psychologists, but spots are filling up fast! Click here for more information and to register!

Please note: all students must have consent from their parent or guardian to attend the Mental Health Summit. Those who register online should upload a signed permission slip with their registration or bring the hard copy permission slip signed by their parent or guardian to the event. 

Spend Summer in the Parks

For those high school students looking for summer jobs, the Chicago Park District has a lot to offer. This is especially true for those students who are interested in becoming lifeguards. Just complete these three easy steps:

(1) Apply online 

(2) Take the swim test (choose a test date when you apply)  

(3) Get hired!

Introducing Summer50 Fest

Chicago families can now explore many summer programming and career opportunities all in one place! Consider visiting Summer50 Fest on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at the United Center. This citywide festival is designed to connect youth and families to summer programming and career opportunities with organizations across Chicago. More than 40 non-profit organizations and city agencies will be on hand, ready to get CPS youth signed up on the spot. Click here to learn more and to pre-register for Summer50 Fest.

Welcoming our District’s Youngest Learners

Finally, for those families who are new to CPS, a reminder that pre-k applications are now open for the 2024–25 school year. Families can visit the Chicago Early Learning website and application portal to register for our free full-day preschool programs for 4-year-olds and half-day programs for 3-year-olds. In addition to using the Early Learning website, parents may call the application hotline at (312) 229-1690 for application support in both English and Spanish.

CPS preschool classrooms are joyful learning environments that spark a lifelong love of learning and set a strong foundation for future success in school. We are proud to have expanded these free, high-quality programs to every community in Chicago, and have no doubt that this strong start will contribute to the incredible gains our youngest learners are achieving in literacy and beyond.

Take Five with Alejandra De La Pena and Sheela Karsten: Pre-k Teachers at Lloyd Elementary

Take Five is a series that highlights some of the many members of the CPS community who are going above and beyond for our schools. If you know someone who is making a difference, nominate them to be featured here.

This week, in honor of applications now being open for next year’s pre-k programs, we’re excited to spotlight two of the District’s amazing preschool teachers. Meet Alejandra De La Pena and Sheela Karsten, who have both been serving the youngest learners at Lloyd Elementary School in Chicago’s Hermosa neighborhood for more than 20 years. When reflecting on their time at Lloyd, these passionate, talented teachers both describe a school community that is strong, caring, and involved.

Why is high-quality pre-k so important?

Ms. De La Pena: There’s a misconception that pre-k is basically just daycare, which is not true. Preschoolers are learning important skills that they are going to carry with them for the rest of their lives. Pre-k students are learning how to read, how to have conversations and speak their minds, and how to express their emotions.

Ms. Karsten: Pre-k is where students learn the foundation for many topics, but especially communication skills. Children are like sponges at this age; you see such a huge amount of growth in such a small period of time, and it’s a really important time for learning.

Staff Spotlights

Clerk Appreciation Day is just around the corner, and we’re kicking things off early by introducing you to Ms. Olga Estrada, a school clerk at Stone Scholastic Academy. Stone staff describe her as an integral part of the school community and the heart and soul of the school. She is known for always being on top of everything and going above and beyond to help her colleagues, as well as parents and students.

And we couldn’t let the week go by without highlighting our three Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Leadership finalists. Click here to get to know Brian Kelly from King College Prep High School, Angela Tucker from Esmond Elementary School, and Lori Zaimi from Peirce School of International Studies. 

A Look Around the District 

At Calmeca Elementary, located in the Brighton Park neighborhood, students and staff celebrated Financial Literacy with a school-wide Gameshow in partnership with Junior Achievement and the podcast program Million Bazillion. Students worked in teams to answer questions about the stock market, inflation, and more for a chance to pie the school’s administrators. 

And we’d like to highlight two students from Mahalia Jackson Elementary in Gresham for their outstanding work in the Do the Write Thing (DtWT) essay contest, an initiative of the National Campaign to Stop Violence. Out of 800 essay submissions, Maliha R. and Jirah W. were selected as two of the top 100 finalists. Congratulations!

Celebrate Earth Day in the Parks on April 20

Join thousands of volunteers in parks across Chicago on Saturday, April 20 at 9am, and participate in the citywide Earth Day Parks Clean Up. Bring friends and family, and invite neighbors to join in. Activities include picking up litter and putting down mulch to give our precious green spaces a fresh start for the season. CPS Students to Benefit from Celebrity Book Donation 

A huge thank you to Daymond John, the entrepreneur famous for his appearances on the TV series Shark Tank and the co-creation of the street wear clothing line FUBU (For Us By Us), for donating thousands of copies of his new children’s book to several CPS schools and Chicago Public Library branches. “Little Daymond Learns to Earn” creates a foundation for financial literacy while teaching young children the value of entrepreneurship.

CPS Leaders Recognized for Restorative Practices

Congratulations to Lakeya Poston, principal of Cather Elementary School, Benjamin McKay, our Director of Restorative Practices and Student Discipline, and Megan Hougard, our Chief of College and Career Success, on receiving the Restorative Community Champion Award from the Newroot Learning Institute. This organization works to uplift restorative mindsets in adults, and to cocreate thriving spaces for youth and communities through equity, wellness, and love.

Dawes Elementary Teacher Honored by NHL

Congratulations go out to Ms. Amani Ghusein of Dawes Elementary, who was surprised this week with the Future Goals Most Valuable Teacher of the Month Award from the National Hockey League (NHL). This award acknowledges the extraordinary capability of teachers to help students explore and enhance learning through their contributions in the classroom. It includes a $10,000 donation to Dawes to expand the school’s sustainability resources.

RE·VER·BER·ATE is a FREE multidisciplinary arts festival featuring 100+ schools, 250+ performances, 35+ workshops facilitated by professional artists, and more! The 2024 My Voice, My School Parent/Guardian Survey is open through April 30, 2024 and can be accessed online at cps.edu/parentsurvey. This annual survey is an excellent opportunity to give us your feedback on where your school is succeeding and where there is room for improvement. Applications Now Open for CPS’ Honorary Student Board Member

Each year, CPS chooses one 11th or 12th-grade student to serve as an honorary member of the Chicago Board of Education. This student has the privilege and responsibility of representing the interests and perspectives of all CPS students, and collaborating with those leaders who shape policy and priorities for the District. 

The Honorary Student Board Member will:

• Represent the CPS student body at the Chicago Board of Education’s monthly meetings throughout the 2024–25 school year;
• Serve as an appointed member on a District-level student committee; and
• Receive a $1,000 scholarship towards their education at a two- or four-year college or university.

To be eligible, students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate proven leadership experience. All rising juniors and seniors who are interested in this position can apply from now through Friday, April 26, 2024 using this Google Form. More information is available on the Board of Education website. 

Applications Now Open for One Summer Chicago

Applications for One Summer Chicago, the city’s program to provide work and paid internship opportunities for youth ages 14–24, are now open! A collaboration among government agencies, community-based organizations, and employers, One Summer Chicago serves more than 20,000 youth each summer. Visit onesummerchicago.org to learn more and to explore job and internship options that are available for the summer of 2024.

Inclusive Summer Jobs Expo for Youth and Young Adults with Disabilities 

The Chicago Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) and the Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) are hosting the Inclusive Summer Job Expo on April 20, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. At the event, held at the Central West Community Center, youth and young adults with disabilities ages 14–24 can learn more about One Summer Chicago and other employment opportunities. Estimadas familias, colegas y simpatizantes de las CPS: 

Como les informamos la semana pasada, las CPS han compartido los presupuestos escolares del año entrante con los directores escolares. Nos complace utilizar un nuevo modelo de financiamiento que satisfará mejor las necesidades de todos los estudiantes, sin importar el tipo, tamaño o dirección de sus escuelas. 

En años previos, los fondos eran asignados a las escuelas a base de la cantidad de estudiantes matriculados. Aunque la matrícula continúa siendo un factor, nuestros presupuestos ahora están mucho más ajustados a las necesidades particulares de cada escuela. Hemos comenzado brindando una cantidad fija de puestos y recursos a cada escuela. Luego, añadimos más fondos a base de lo que los estudiantes en cada escuela necesiten. Este modelo de financiamiento es más equitativo y transparente, y establece un estándar para que cada estudiante reciba una educación de calidad en cualquiera escuela que asista. A pesar del ambiente presupuestario difícil, los presupuestos escolares del año entrante continuarán brindando financiamiento crítico a los programas y las estrategias que actualmente ayudan a nuestros estudiantes a recuperarse de la pandemia de COVID-19, como aumentos a la cantidad de maestros e intervencionistas, programas extraesoclares y de verano, y tutoría de alta dosis en lectura y matemáticas gracias al programa Tutor Corps.

Al momento, nuestros directores escolares están trabajando duro para finalizar sus presupuestos escolares individuales para el año entrante. A principios de mayo, las escuelas presentarán estos presupuestos al Distrito, y más tarde en la primavera las CPS presentarán el presupuesto a la Junta de Educación para ser ratificado. Continuaremos manteniendo a las familias y el personal informados sobre el presupuesto escolar a medida que seguimos el proceso.

Asistan a las segunda edición anual de la Cumbre de Salud Mental

Los últimos dos meses de clases pueden ser muy emocionantes, con ceremonias de fin de año, eventos y celebraciones ocupando mucho de nuestros calendarios. Pero también puede ser un tiempo muy estresante, especialmente para nuestros estudiantes de escuela secundaria, que están estudiando intensivamente para los exámenes finales, buscando empleos de verano y haciendo decisiones importantes sobre sus futuros.  

Exhorto a nuestros estudiantes de escuela secundaria que estén sintiendo esa presión a que consideren asisitir a la Cumbre de Salud Mental de las CPS. Esta cumbre, que tendrá lugar en Malcolm X College, será una enfocada en el autocuidado, destrezas de relajamiento, y conversaciones útiles sobre cómo manejar el estrés y evitar el agotamiento mental. El evento es completamente libre de costo e incluirá desayuno y almuerzo.  

Esta segunda edición anual de la Cumbre de Salud Mental también está disponible para los consejeros, trabajadores sociales y psicólogos de las CPS, pero los espacios se están llenando rápidamente. ¡Hagan clic aquí para obtener más información e inscribirse!

El Distrito de Parques de Chicago tiene mucho que ofrecer a aquellos estudiantes de escuela secundaria buscando empleos de verano. Esto es especialmente cierto para aquellos estudiantes interesados en convertirse en salvavidas. Solo hay que completar los siguientes tres pasos fáciles: 

1. Solicitar en línea 
2. Tomar la prueba de natación (se escoge la fecha al solicitar)
3. ¡Ser contratados!

Éstos y otros puestos están disponibles para estudiantes, gracias al Distrito de Parques de Chicago; les permiten obtener un salario, desarrollar destrezas, hacer amigos, mantenerse activos, divertirse y hacer una diferencia en sus comunidades. Presentando Summer50 Fest

Bienvenidas a los aprendices más jóvenes del Distrito

Finalmente, para aquellas familias nuevas a los CPS, les recuerdo que ha comenzado el plazo de solicitud para la sesión de prekínder del año escolar 2024-25. Las familias pueden visitar el sitio web y portal de solicitud de Educación Preescolar de Chicago e inscribir a sus niños para nuestros programas de día completo (para niños de cuatro años) y programas de medio día (para niños de 3 años). Los padres, además de utilizar el sitio web de Educación Preescolar, también pueden llamar a la línea directa de inscripción al (312) 229-1690 para obtener apoyo en sus solicitudes en inglés y español. 

Las aulas preescolares de las CPS son ambientes de aprendizaje alegres que despiertan el amor permanente por el aprendizaje y establecen fuertes cimientos para  el éxito escolar futuro. Nos enorgullece haber expandido estos programas gratis y de alta calidad a cada comunidad de Chicago y no tengo duda que este comienzo fuerte contribuirá a los increíbles logros que nuestros aprendices más jóvenes están alcanzando en la alfabetización y más allá.

Cinco preguntas a Alejandra de la Pena y Shela Karsten, maestras de prekínder en la Escuela Primaria Lloyd

Esta semana, para celebrar el plazo de solicitud para los programas de prekínder del año entrante, nos complace resaltar a dos de las fantásticas maestras preescolares de nuestro Distrito. Conozcan a Alejandra de la Pena y Sheela Karsten, que por más de veinte años han estado sirviendo a los estudiantes más jóvenes de la Escuela Primaria Lloyd, en el barrio Hermosa. Al reflejar sobre su tiempo en Lloyd, las dos apasionadas y talentosas maestras describen una comunidad escolar fuerte, afectuosa e involucrada.  

¿Por qué es tan importante tener un prekínder de calidad?  

Alejandra de la Pena: Se malentiende que el prekínder es básicamente un espacio de cuido, y eso no es cierto. Los estudiantes preescolares aprenden destrezas importantes que llevarán consigo por el resto de sus vidas. Aprenden a leer, cómo tener conversaciones y decir lo que piensan, y cómo expresar sus emociones.  

Sheela Karsten: El prekínder es donde los estudiantes aprenden los cimientos de muchos temas, pero especialmente destrezas de comunicación. Los niños de esa edad son como esponjas: se ve mucho crecimiento en un periodo de tiempo muy corto, y es un periodo muy importante para el aprendizaje.

Personal destacado

El día de Apreciación a los Oficinistas está a la vuelta de la esquina, y comenzamos las cosas temprano presentando a Olga Estrada, oficinista escolar en la Academia Escolástica Stone. El personal de Stone la describe como una parte íntegra de la comunidad escolar y el corazón y alma de la escuela. Es conocida por siempre estar al tope de todo y por dar el máximo para ayudar a sus colegas, los padres y los estudiantes. 

Y no podemos dejar que la semana pase sin resaltar a nuestros tres finalistas para el Premio Golden Apple por Excelencia en el Liderazgo. Un vistazo al Distrito

En la Escuela Primaria Calmeca, en el barrio Brighton Park, los estudiantes y el personal celebraron el alfabetismo financiero con un concurso organizado con la colaboración de Junior Achievement y el pódcast Million Bazillion. Los estudiantes trabajaron en equipo para responder preguntas sobre el mercado de acciones, la inflación, y más, para ganar la oportunidad de lanzarle pasteles a los administradores escolares.

Celebren el Día de la Tierra en los parques el sábado, 20 de abril

Únanse a miles de voluntarios en parques por todo Chicago el 20 de abril a las 9 a. m. para participar de una limpieza de parques del Día de la Tierra. Lleven a amigos y familiares, e inviten a los vecinos a participar. Las actividades incluirán recoger basura y plantar mantillo para darles a nuestro parques un comienzo fresco esta temporada. Los Estudiantes de las CPS serán recipientes de un donativo de libros por una celebridad

Felicitaciones a Lakeya Poston, directora de la Escuela Primaria Cather; Benjamin McKay, nuestro director de prácticas restauradoras y disciplina estudiantil, y Megan Hougard, nuestra jefa de Éxito Universitario y Profesional, por recibir el Premio Restorative Community Champion, del Newroot Learning Institute. La NHL rinde homenaje a maestra de la Escuela Primaria Dawes

Felicitaciones a la maestra Amani Ghusein de la Escuela Primaria Dawes, quien fue sorprendida esta semana con el premio Future Goals de la Liga Nacional de Hockey (NHL, según sus siglas en inglés) para la maestra más valiosa del mes. Este premio reconoce la destreza extraordinaria de los maestros que, por medio de sus contribuciones en las aulas, ayudan a los estudiantes a explorar y mejorar el aprendizaje. ¡RE·VER·BER·ATE es un festival de arte multidisciplinario GRATIS que incluye más de 100 escuelas, más de 250 presentaciones, más de 35 talleres facilitados por artistas profesionales y más! ¡El festival tendrá lugar en el centro de Chicago del 1 al 4 de mayo de 2024! Pasen aquí para inscribirse para talleres gratis y presentaciones selectas. Estos eventos incluyen: 

• Presentaciones y talleres de RE•VER•BER•ATE: Estos talleres gratuitos les permitirán participar de creación de joyería, escritura de canciones, improvisación, hip hop ¡y mucho más! Pueden inscribirse y ver el programa completo con horarios y lugares aquí. 
• Presentación del 60.o aniversario del ACPA: Se requieren boletos el sábado. Vean los detalles y reserven sus boletos gratis aquí.

Edición de 2024 de la encuesta My Voice, My School

La edición de este año de la encuesta para padres y tutores legales My Voice, My School puede ser encontrada en línea en cps.edu/parentsurvey, y estará disponible hasta el 30 de abril de 2024. Esta encuesta anual presenta una excelente oportunidad para ofrecer sus opiniones sobre las fortalezas de sus escuelas y las maneras en que podrían mejorar. La encuesta es completamente anónima, está disponible en varios idiomas, y toma unos cinco a diez minutos en completar. Favor escribir a parentssurveys@cps.edu con cualquier pregunta.

Foros comunitarios sobre el Plan Estratégico Quinquenal

Reuniones comunitarias sobre el capital

Como parte de nuestro compromiso con la participación familiar en cuanto al proceso presupuestario del Distrito, estamos pidiendo opiniones comunitarias a medida que preparamos nuestro Plan Capital para el año fiscal 2025 (FY25). Sus contribuciones nos permitirán entender mejor cuáles inversiones tendrán el impacto más positivo en sus niños. Para hacerse escuchar, favor completar esta encuesta de cinco preguntas.

Ha comenzado el plazo de nominación para el puesto de estudiante miembro honorario de la Junta de las CPS

Cada año, las CPS escogen a un estudiante de undécimo o duodécimo grado para que ejerza como miembro honorario de la Junta de Educación de Chicago. Este estudiante tiene el privilegio y la responsabilidad de representar los intereses y las perspectivas de todos los estudiantes de las CPS y colaborar con aquellos líderes que dan forma a las políticas y las prioridades del Distrito. 

El estudiante miembro honorario de la Junta: 

• representará al estudiantado de las CPS en las reuniones mensuales de la Junta de Educación de Chicago durante el año escolar 2024-25; 
• ejercerá como miembro designado de un comité estudiantil a nivel de Distrito;
• recibirá una beca de $1,000 para ayudar a financiar su educación en una institución de dos o cuatro años, o universidad. 

Para ser elegible, los estudiantes deben tener un promedio de calificaciones de 3.0 o mayor y demostrar experiencia de liderazgo comprobada. Aquellos estudiantes que el próximo año escolar estén en undécimo o duodécimo grado y estén interesados en este puesto pueden nominarse desde ahora hasta el viernes, 26 de abril de 2024 utilizando este formulario de Google (formulario en inglés). Comienza el plazo de solicitud para One Summer Chicago

¡Ya están disponibles en línea las solicitudes para One Summer Chicago, el programa de pasantías de verano para los jóvenes de Chicago de 14 a 24 años! Creado gracias a una colaboración entre agencias gubernamentales, organizaciones comunitarias y patronos, One Summer Chicago sirve a más de 20,000 jóvenes cada verano. Visiten onesummerchicago.org para saber más y explorar opciones de empleos y pasantías disponibles para el verano de 2024.

Exposición de empleos de verano inclusiva para jóvenes con discapacidades

La Oficina para Personas con Discapacidades de la Alcaldía de Chicago (MOPD, según sus siglas en inglés) y el Departamento de la Familia y Servicios de Apoyo (DFSS, según sus siglas en inglés) llevarán a cabo la Inclusive Summer Job Expo el 20 de abril de 2024 de 10 a. m. a 2 p. m. En el evento, que tendrá lugar en el Centro Comunitario Central West, los jóvenes discapacitados de catorce a veinticuatro años podrán aprender más sobre One Summer Chicago y otras oportunidades de empleo.
