Shade Structures
When conditions or budget prevent the inclusion of shade trees in site designs, shade structures may be needed to extend the seasonal use of outdoor areas. These elements must be merited based on programming and designed to provide multiple benefits. Though natural forms of shade are preferred, shade structures can be appropriate for outdoor classrooms, playgrounds, plazas, or seating areas to protect students from extended sun exposure in the warmer months and provide shelter. Shade structure design and materials to be coordinated with the school, CPS, and the AOR.
Monuments
Some CPS schools may consider including outdoor monuments, whether for artistic value; to memorialize an event, group or individual; mark a significant landmark; or for other reasons provided by a school or community. In many cases, these monuments may require special footings or bases, coverings, or be an architectural structure in themselves. Monuments shall prioritize safety for site users and be designed with sensitivity and consideration towards the community, school users, and CPS values.
Site Structures
In some instances, outdoor programming may require auxiliary architectural structures such as greenhouses, pavilions, gazebos and other coverings. Local zoning codes and permitted uses shall be considered and inclusion of these elements shall be coordinated with the school, designer, and CPS based on programmatic need.
