Planning Rationale
Locker facilities are intended for physical education activities, team sports and pool activities (if a pool is provided). Separate male and female Locker Rooms in addition to a minimum of one (1) All Gender Locker Rooms shall be provided. All Locker Room functions shall be configured to eliminate line of sight visibility (including mirrors) from Corridors, Gymnatorium/Gymnasium, pool deck, or opposite sex’s Locker Room area.
Design Considerations
Location
The Locker Rooms shall be directly adjacent to the space that they serve. Aquatic Center Locker Rooms shall have direct access to the pool area (if one is provided) due to Code requirements. The Gymnatorium/Gymnasium and the Aquatic Center Locker Rooms may be combined into one larger Locker Room as an alternate while maintaining separate designations for the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium and Aquatic Center. (Dry Locker Room vs. Wet Locker Room)
Layout
The locker areas for Physical Education and Team shall share a common toilet and shower area. The lockers shall be separated from one another via security gates. These coiling shutter gates allow visiting athletic teams use of Team locker areas with access to the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium, restricting access to the PE locker area.
There are three main “zones” within the Locker Rooms, including: Locker Zone, Shower Zone and Toilet Zone.
- Locker Zone (Multi-user):
- Provide an area where students can store personal items.
- The lockers shall be located above integral benches.
- Configure lockers into bays for privacy. The bay ends are capped by a wall with full height mirror.
- Physical Education lockers shall be half height; Team lockers shall be full height.
- Provide accessible lockers per the percentage required by Code.
- Shower Zone:
- Showers shall be located near the lockers.
- Provide partitions and curtains at each shower location for maximum privacy.
- Towels are placed in bins near the shower area.
- For added privacy, provide Private Changing areas immediately adjacent to multiple/individual stall shower area.
- Provide a minimum of one (1) accessible shower. Roll-in accessible showers with permanent tile-faced benches are required, however, if there are space constraints, a transfer type accessible shower is acceptable.
- Toilet Room Zone:
- Configure for maximum privacy of users within the Toilet Room.
- Locate between the Physical Education Locker area and Team Locker area.
- When space allows, provide a Personal Care Stall in lieu of a standard accessible stall.
- Provide wet and dry toilet areas in the Aquatic Center Locker Rooms. These two areas shall be separated into two distinct zones within the Locker Room.
- Wet: The wet toilets shall be located within the locker area near the pool deck entrance to provide direct access to the pool.
- Dry: The dry toilets shall be located near the Corridor entrance to the Locker Room. The dry area is for those who are dressed in street clothes.
- Drinking Fountains
- Provide in areas separated from within the Toilet and Shower Zones.
- Hair Dryers
- Position between Shower and Toilet Zones.
- Suit spinners shall be provided in Aquatic Center Locker Rooms.
- Vapor Barrier
- Provide a vapor barrier between the pool area and all other adjacent areas.
- All Gender Locker Room: Provide a minimum of one (1) All Gender Locker Room in the vicinity of the Locker Rooms. The entry to the All Gender Locker Room shall not appear to be associated with either the Men’s or Women’s Locker Rooms or be isolated from the Locker Rooms. The entrance to the All Gender Locker Room shall be in close proximity to the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium.
- Included within the All Gender Locker Room: an accessible shower, toilet, lavatory, lockers and a changing bench.
