Planning Rationale
Several spaces are required to support Physical Education and Sports Administration. They serve as accessory functions to the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium, Aquatic Center, Strength Training/Fitness Room, and Locker Rooms. These spaces include: Staff Offices, Auxiliary Office and Storage, Athletic Director’s Office, Trainer, Laundry, Storage, Ticket Office and Concessions.
Design Considerations
Location
The offices and support spaces shall be located within the Physical Education/Sports Administration Zone in close proximity to the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium and the Aquatic Center.
Layout
The Staff Offices, Trainer, Laundry, and Storage shall be located directly adjacent to the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium and Aquatic Center near the entrance to the Locker Rooms. The Athletic Director’s Office and the Auxiliary Office/ Storage shall be accessible via the Corridor. The Ticket Office and Concessions shall be located off the Main Entry/Lobby near the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium.
The following spaces shall be accommodated within the Physical Education/Sports Administration zone:
- Staff Offices: Staff Offices may be shared between Physical Education teachers and coaches. Locker Room and Toilet Room with shower are paired with each Staff Office. Provide a minimum of two (2) separate each for both Physical Education and the Aquatic Center. The Staff Offices shall have both direct view and direct access into the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium and/or Aquatic Center, and have direct access to the Locker Rooms.
- Athletic Director’s Office: Provide one (1) Office with direct view to the Corridor.
- Auxiliary Office: This Office shall be used for outside facilitators including the Chicago Park District. Provide one (1) associated Storage room for the Auxiliary Office.
- Trainer: Provide infrastructure to support one (1) ice machine and one (1) whirlpool.
- Laundry: Provide infrastructure to support two (2) sets of side by side washers and dryers, one (1) utility sink, and (1) folding table/storage combination unit. Optimally located near an exterior wall for venting.
- Sports Equipment Storage: Provide storage for the variety of activities that the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium supports. Shall be accessible directly from the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium with ease of access for equipment and materials via double doors. Access shall be provided to the exterior via overhead ceiling door. If this is not possible, provisions for storage at the exterior shall be made instead. Multiple storage rooms may be provided in order to meet the required total square footage. Maximize wall surface for shelving.
- Ticket Office and Concessions: These two (2) spaces may be combined into one (1) larger room or be provided as two (2) separate rooms depending on the program. Optimally, the Ticket Office and Concessions will serve the Aquatic Center (when an Aquatic Center is provided). Provide a service counter, hand sink and an overhead coiling door to the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium Pre-Function Area.
