Planning Rationale
The Dance Classroom is a Performing Arts Classroom that allows for students to learn, practice and perform dance.
The Dance Studio is a physical education and performing arts teaching station which is a standard space for Fine & Performing Arts High Schools, and an alternative for other schools. The Dance Studio is also a practice space for the performing arts program.
Design Considerations
Location
Ideally, this classroom shall be located on the first floor. As noise and vibration are produced in this space, ensure noise and vibration isolation are addressed horizontally and vertically in the space so that sounds and vibrations are not transferred through the structure. An acoustical consultant shall be consulted. Privacy and modesty shall be taken into consideration and there shall be no direct view of the occupants from the exterior or within the school.
- Location: This dance studio shall be located in close proximity to the gymnasium and locker rooms. A dedicated storage room or closets shall be accessed directly from the room to house portable barres, yoga mats and other equipment. For privacy/modesty, glazing should be provided so that there are no direct views into the space from the exterior of the building or from within school.
Classroom Layout
- One wall shall be wall to wall mirrors that includes a multi-height dance barre - permanently attached to the wall.
- A second wall of mirrors and dance barres located perpendicular to the primary mirror wall is encouraged.
- A ceiling track with a curtain shall be installed in front of all the two mirrored walls. This provides the ability to cover mirrors if not wanted and provide extra acoustical performance.
- Room to be open and clear of obstructions; no structural elements, casework or furniture shall be placed in this classroom. Portable bars may be used for flexibility.
- Primary teaching wall shall be planned on the remaining open wall perpendicular to the primary mirror wall.
- Optimally located near drinking fountains in corridor.
- Refer to 3.1.1 Grades 1-8 Classroom for additional requirements.
Storage
To be provided directly adjacent to the classroom. Items to be provided but not limited to:
- Cubbies for student use for personal belongings during class
- Lockable cabinets
In some cases the dance studio may be also used as a green room adjacent to the stage. If being used as a green room, a PA system should connect this space to the stage.
The dance room should not be used as a wrestling room in a performing arts school. If a typical high school, a Dance Studio may also serve as a wrestling room.
