4.9.17 Personal Care Services

Planning Rationale

The Personal Care Services pathway prepares students for careers in the professional hair and beauty industry by providing real-world experiences in state-of-the art cosmetology and barbering labs.

Students can earn certificates and engage with industry professionals through speaker events, site visits, job shadows, and internships that will advance their knowledge and experience of the hair and beauty profession. Topics covered in the program include safety and infection control, hair cutting, hair coloring, chemical texturizing, professionalism, and entrepreneurship.

Pathways

Barbering

The three-year Barbering program provides interested students with the skills (e.g., hair cutting, facial razor, and aseptic techniques) and experience necessary for entry-level positions post graduation. Classes will take place in a room set up like a barber shop to give hands-on training and skills practice utilizing tools of the industry.

Cosmetology

Students in the Cosmetology program will receive training via classroom study, demonstrations, and practical application and develop the skills necessary for entry-level cosmetology positions. Classes will take place in a room that is set up like a salon to give students experience utilizing equipment and skills currently found in the industry.

Layout

The Barbering and Cosmetology Labs shall be configured like a salon and barber shop with the latest industry standard equipment and is immediately adjacent to the Barbering and Cosmetology Classroom.
