Planning Rationale
Overview
When planning the points of entry into the building, many factors shall be considered. These include but are not limited to: security, access to publicly used assembly spaces, adjacencies and relationships between programs. Provide intuitive way-finding and the ability for after hours access while the rest of the building is secured separately. All main entrances shall be equipped with security equipment.
- Main Entry: A primary entrance is to be designated for each school. The entry sequence shall include an architecturally integrated, property ventilated and drained canopy for student queuing. The main entry shall be located in close proximity to available parking. Because the main entry serves visitors, it must include signage requiring all visitors to check in at the schools Administration Suite. It is required that the Administration Suite’s waiting/reception area have a visual connection to the main entry.
- Aiphone: Refer to CPS Accessibility Standards Details Sheet ADA.01 for Aiphone location requirements.
- Signs: Refer to CPS Accessibility Standards Details Sheet ADA.01 for sign location requirements.
- Lobbies: May be designed as 1.5 or 2 story volumes. Avoid creating a shelf condition at the top of the vestibule within the lobby.
- Security: Appropriate security system infrastructure shall be provided as designated by CPS Department of Safety and Security. The lobby shall be designed to facilitate a centrally located security desk and have infrastructure for metal detectors and scanners. Electronic monitoring of the front doors as well as an electronic door release shall be provided to permit ingress into the building from the Administration Suite.
- Fire Alarm System: The annunciator panel and City-Tie is to be located inside the main entry in close proximity to the Administrative Center and in conjunction with City codes.
Design Considerations
Coordination of the design and the specification of the automatic door operator is essential. Careful consideration must be made to the hinge location on the door leaf for good circulation in and out of the building. The location of the interior wall mounted actuator paddle which operates the door leaf shall be in close proximity to the accessible door leaf. Operation of the automatic door operator when the door is locked can lead to premature failure of the unit and proper system interlocks need to be included. Coordination of any requirements for an electric strike as part of the security entrance system on these openings is essential.
Sequence of Operation Automatic Doors
- Entry operation:
- Activate Door Access at Aiphone
- Master Station in Office Initiates Opening Sequence
- Exterior Strike or Electric Panic Activates
- Exterior Opener Activates
- Exterior Door Opens
- Vestibule Opener Activates
- Vestibule Door Opens
- Delays are Satisfied and Doors Close
- Exit operation:
- Wall Mounted Push Actuator Paddle at Hallway
- Interior Vestibule Door Opener Activates
- Interior Vestibule Door Opens
- Wall Mounted Push Actuator Paddle Within Vestibule
- Exterior Vestibule Door Opener Activates
- Exterior Vestibule Door Opens
- Exterior Opener Activates
- Exterior Door Opens
- Delays are Satisfied and Doors Close
Entry Vestibules
- One vestibule entrance shall be designated to have ADA access requiring a low-energy automatic operator (door operator).
- The vestibule doors shall satisfy the following Aiphone operating requirements:
- Visitors wishing entry during school hours push a button on Aiphone Door Station, and if entry is permitted, an electric strike shall activate operation of the automatic door opener and remain in fully open position for a duration of five (5) seconds, typical.
- Exiting is achieved by one (1) inside wall mounted push actuator paddle operating the vestibule door and a second wall mounted push actuator paddle inside the vestibule operating the exterior door. Each individual door will remain in fully open position for a duration of five (5) seconds, typical.
- A separate exterior door at that same main entrance vestibule shall be provided with a keyed access, and exterior pull.
- Only one door at the main entry shall have an outside keyed lock, and all other exterior doors in this series shall have door pulls.
- For exterior door configuration refer to 2.2.2 Exterior Doors.
- One door of all secondary entrances shall be provided with a key cylinder access and pull for entry by persons having a key. No other doors at these secondary entrances shall have keyed access or pulls. Such doors to include those leading to other classroom buildings on campus, gym doors to playground, doors to trash compactors, and staff entrance from parking lots.
- Upon approval by CPS Capital and the Office of School Safety and Security, it may be determined that one or more designated exterior doors shall be provided with an electric strike and/or outside keyed access and door pull. These doors may be unlocked from the outside by someone having the appropriate key or keycard. A person who wishes entry may also request access by Aiphone intercom and the electric latch will be released from the inside. Doors falling under this category include, doors requiring 24/7 entry, custodial entrance, and kitchen deliveries.
- Selected exterior doors that are secondary entrances shall be provided with an outside keyed access and door pull. These doors may be unlocked from the outside by someone having the appropriate key. These include doors leading to exterior temporary classrooms, gym doors to playground, and doors to trash compactors.
- All exterior doors shall have contacts on the door head and frame and will be linked to the security system so as to send an alert whenever a specific door has been opened.
- The Aiphone, any associated camera, door contacts, and wiring to electric strike and automatic door operators is not provided with access hardware unless otherwise determined by CPS Capital and Office of School Safety and Security.
- When creating a canopy condition at the main entry consider the roof drainage strategy to ensure no ice buildup on sidewalks or entry plaza during winter.
- Walk off floor mats.
- Walk off floor grating within recessed slab is preferred, however, consideration for LEED requirements and practical maintenance solutions may require surface floor walk off mats or roll-up vinyl-hinged mat extending into lobby space to achieve the 10’ minimum length requirement. Walk off mat proposed solutions to be reviewed and approved by Capital Planning.
Lobby
Lobbies shall provide an intuitive way to begin navigating entry into the building. Lobby spaces should provide visual connections to the Administrative Suite, provide security and the ability to monitor guests, and architecturally reinforce a welcoming and open building.
