Automatic sprinklers are attached to piping containing water and that is connected to water supply. Water discharges immediately from sprinklers when they are opened. Sprinklers open when heat melts fusible links or destroys frangible devices. Hose connections are included if indicated. All areas of the facility are to be served by a Wet Pipe System unless otherwise indicated on the plans.
Materials
All piping 2” and small to be black or galvanized iron pipe with threaded fittings and joints. Piping of 2-½” and larger to be the same, or with grooved end couplings and joints.
Service
Connect fire-suppression piping to water-service piping of size and in location indicated for service entrance to building. Install shutoff valve, backflow preventer, pressure gage, drain, and other accessories indicated at connection to water-service piping.
Distribution
Piping mains are to be run in areas that are easily accessible and observable. Mains are to be run in Corridor spaces and areas with open ceiling when possible. Risers are to be within protected stairwells or otherwise open areas.
Sprinklers
All sprinklers are to be UL listed or FM approved with a 175 psig minimum pressure rating. All heat responsive elements to comply with UL 199. Sprinkler type to be determined based on space use, space temperature, and Code requirements. Wire cage guards should be identified by zone where required.
Zoning
Space zoning is to be considered for space of similar usage, hazard rating and flow rate. Provide separate sprinkler zones for each floor level and each floor area, not to exceed 52,000 square feet. Each area shall be provided complete with a control valve with tamper switch, water flow sensor, inspector’s test and drain assembly and system pressure gauge. Provide a similar control/alarm test/drain arrangement at the base of each fire standpipe or combined sprinkler/standpipe.
Zone Valving
Zone valving to be contained within the Fire Pump Room unless otherwise indicated on plans. Zone valving to include slow-close butterfly valve and water flow switch.
Draining
Each zone shall have the ability to be drained from its lowest points for maintenance and testing. Drains are to be routed to an open site drain which runs through a separator prior to discharge to the sanitary system.
Inspector’s Test Connection
Install in sprinkler system piping at hydraulically most remote location of each system or zone, complete with shutoff valve, sized and located according to NFPA 13 and Chicago Building Code.
