8.3.3 Standpipes

Standpipe systems shall be provided in new buildings and structures per CBC 905.1

The purpose of installing a standpipe system is to provide a readily accessible water supply for use by fire department personnel and/or trained occupants during fire situations. A standpipe is a type of rigid water pipe to which fire hoses can be connected that is built into multistory buildings in a vertical position. If a standpipe is required, the pressure requirements at the top of the standpipe shall be reviewed with the Fire Department.

Standpipe systems required during construction and demolition operations shall be provided.

Materials

All piping to be black or galvanized, Schedule 40, pipe with threaded or grooved end couplings and joints.

Location

Standpipes shall be located in easily observable and serviceable locations and not enclosed within walls or chases. Standpipes shall be run within main stairwells unless otherwise indicated on plans.

Draining

A separate drain line shall run next to any standpipe riser for drainage of each zone as needed. This riser shall drain to a separation basin prior to connection to the main sanitary system.
