8.2.3 System Sizing

Fire-suppression sprinkler system design shall be approved by Chicago Bureau of Fire Prevention.

Fire Protection Performance Requirements

Fire-suppression sprinkler system design and installation shall be in accordance with Chicago Building Code.

Buildings of Adult Education (Group B occupancies) are required to be provided with an automatic sprinkler system if the building is more than 70 feet in height.

Margin of Safety for available water flow and pressure shall be 10 percent, including losses through water-service piping on site, valves, and backflow preventers. Minimum of 5 psi shall be provided.

Minimum sizing criteria for fire protection systems and shall be coordinated with the requirements of the City of Chicago Building Code and CPS Master Specifications. Where conflicts exist, the more stringent requirement shall apply.

Fire Pump Systems

Fire Pump Systems shall be initially sized by the EOR based on building size, hazard classes of the spaces and flow density required. This size shall be used to estimate the required electrical demand and system size for coordination with all trades. Final sizing shall be confirmed by the Fire Protection Contractor based on final, approved hydraulic calculations.

A manual fire alarm system shall be installed in Group E occupancies. Where automatic sprinkler systems or smoke detectors are installed, the systems or detectors shall be connected to the building fire alarm system.
