3.1.6 Multi-Purpose Classroom

Planning Rationale

The multi-purpose room is a flexible teaching space that can be used interchangeably for classroom instruction, group gathering, and physical activity. It should be noted that this convertible space is not a standard programmatic requirement and is addressed on a school by school basis. This room can be converted into two standard academic classrooms and shall be designed as such. The Multi-Purpose Room shall be planned to be subdivided by a folding partition with appropriate structural support for the flexible wall. The space is intended for a range of uses including faculty meetings, parent/teacher conferences, and local school council meetings, etc.

If future need is for two separate classrooms, the folding partition shall be removed and a permanent demising wall with required acoustic rating to be provided in its place.

Classroom Layout

The room is based on the equivalent size of two standard classrooms.

  • Primary teaching walls shall be planned at the walls opposite the folding partition. The folding partition may have a marker board surface to serve as a secondary teaching wall subject to CPS approval.
  • Separate means of egress must be provided per standard classroom design parameters for both the open and subdivided scenarios.
  • All supporting power, data, MEP/FP and security provisions shall be provided for each of the subdivided spaces to operate in a separate, independent and stand alone configuration.
  • The provision for operable/accessible windows shall be provided for each of the subdivided spaces.
  • See 3.1.1 Grades 1-8 Classroom for additional requirements.
