9.2.1 Utility Electrical Service

Main Electrical Service

The Main Electrical Service shall be sized appropriately for the facility size per code and project requirements.

Switchboard

The size of the service switchboard shall take into account any renewable energy systems that may be part of the design or projected for future installation.

Service

Coordinate new electrical service with the respective utility company representative and provide all required drawings, load letter, and information for the timely implementation of the new service.

Conduit

Service shall be routed underground in PVC conduit, encased in concrete. A spare conduit shall be provided in the duct bank in accordance with CPS Standard Electrical Details, local utility requirements, or local code, whichever is more stringent.

Transformer

Pad mounted electrical utility service transformer shall be located outside adjacent to the school building exterior wall. One transformer shall step down utility voltage to secondary service voltage. Contractor shall provide all service entrance conduits and service entrance cables. Contractor shall furnish transformer pad per local utility specifications. Include “solar-ready” design in Load Letter to Utility for proper sizing of transformer.

Emergency Systems

Emergency Systems shall be provided from the normal source of power electrical distribution system and emergency source as noted in this guideline.

Fire Pump

A separate utility service will be provided for the fire pump from the secondary side of the utility transformer. Provide secondary power from the approved on-site emergency generator, if applicable.

Metering

Local utility service shall be metered at one indoor lighting and power switchboard located in the Main Electrical Room and at the fire pump service located near the Fire Pump Room. Metering will be provided in accordance with the local utility requirement. Owner’s metering module shall be provided at the main service switchboard per CPS specifications. Coordinate provision of meters with utility company to account for the provision of renewable sources.

Renewable Energy

Consideration is to be given to building integrated renewable energy generation with a goal of generating 100% of electricity on-site. If CPS is engaged in a third-party power purchase of renewable energy produced at its facilities, then coordination among the building designers, CPS and the third-party provider will be included in the design process. Coordinate work with the CPS Sustainability representatives and utility’s interconnection department as applicable for each project.

Solar-Ready

If photovoltaics (PV) will not be installed as part of the project, the project shall be solar-ready. Locate the electrical room convenient to a likely location for a PV system. Provide appropriately sized conduit from the roof to the electrical room. Add space for a PV circuit breaker in the switchgear. Provide space for the inverter and balance of system (BOS) components, with sufficient clearance in front of the components to comply with CEC. Provide an internet connection for a PV monitoring system.

Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

Provide 40-ampere minimum dedicated branch circuit for the future installation of the EVSE.
