Connecting Classroom Instruction to Potential Future Careers

The Illinois College of Optometry has been an amazing partner for CPS.
One of our District’s top priorities is to provide students of all grade levels with opportunities to learn about jobs and careers that connect to their interests in the classroom. Students from South Shore International College Preparatory High School had the recent opportunity to visit the Illinois College of Optometry. This experience allowed them to learn about optometry as a potential career path and tour both its academic and clinical facilities.
The Illinois College of Optometry has been an amazing partner for CPS. Dr. Robbs has welcomed many groups of CPS students and has been impressed by their interest and engagement.
Students did everything from touring the college and its dorms to learning about the different courses offered to taking part in fun projects related to eye health. We were able to chat with Oluwatosin, one of the students who participated in the visit, about his experience. Learn more about it below.
Was your visit what you expected?
I actually went on a similar visit last year, and I feel that this year was way better than last year. I was definitely not expecting such a variety of different activities. It was super engaging. The tour guide was amazing. The energy was super vibrant.
Did the visit tie in with what you have been learning in the classroom?
We’ve learned basic things related to getting a physical exam. That includes checking what type of vision you have. We’ve learned about how to conduct an eye test by taking steps backward and seeing what letters you can read. We got to see a lot of that at the college as well.
What are some of your goals for the future?
I’m a senior this year. It’s been hectic, but, at the same time, I’m very hopeful for the future. Even though you can’t predict what will happen, you can definitely prepare for it. I would rate my senior year a nine out of ten so far. My goals are to graduate from a four-year college and then attend medical school to pursue my passion, which is to become a neurosurgeon.
What advice would you give to other students in terms of taking advantage of opportunities like this visit?
Even if an opportunity doesn’t seem interesting to you, taking the initiative to do so can help you become a better person. Learning different things will always help you become better. While every opportunity might not be exactly connected to your dream career, they can still be beneficial.
At the same time, I don’t think you should compare yourself to others, because comparison is the thief of joy. When you find yourself tempted to do so, I recommend taking a deep breath and writing down your qualities and accomplishments.
