22 March 2021
Shifting our perspective to view students as agents of their own healing and wellness is a key step to help them reach their full potential.
The term “healing-centered” was introduced by Dr. Shawn Ginwright in 2018 to represent the incompleteness of the term “trauma-informed” when referring to supporting young people. According to Dr. Ginwright: “A healing-centered approach to addressing trauma requires a different question that moves beyond ‘what happened to you’ to ‘what’s right with you’ and views those exposed to trauma as agents in the creation of their own well-being rather than victims of traumatic events.”
Shifting our perspective to view students as agents of their own healing and wellness is a key step to help them reach their full potential. As we push through a year of social, political, and public health crises, how we can help our schools heal is top of mind. The district’s new Healing-Centered Framework will be our roadmap to support the social and emotional wellness of our school communities. Here are three things you need to know about it:
1. All stakeholders are involved in creating healing-centered schools.
- Students are agents of their own healing. They use the resources provided to heal and build skills to live healthy lives.
- Staff actively promote mental wellness and support students who have been impacted by trauma. They also support their own wellness.
- Families and community members advocate for the supports that students need to heal.
2. Being healing-centered means following core values that C.A.R.E.
Letter | What it Stands For | What it Means |
---|---|---|
C | Collective Healing | Recognizing that everyone has a role to play in healing their communities. |
A | Asset-Based Approaches | Trauma is not viewed as a limitation for students to heal. |
R | Relationships | Students have access to supportive adults within their schools. |
E | Environment | Every student feels welcome at school. |
3. There are five key ways schools will help students and staff heal.
- Education and Awareness: Students and staff will learn about trauma and mental wellness.
- Skills and Strategies: Students and staff will develop ways to cope with stressors and manage trauma.
- Culture and Climate: A school’s physical environment will promote wellness and belonging.
- Resources: A combination of people and programs will address trauma and promote healing.
- Crisis Support: The CPS community will promote recovery after a trauma-inducing crisis.

(‘what happened to you’) a ‘¿cómo puedes estar bien?’
