How Teamwork Translates to Success at New Sullivan Elementary

With the Chicago Bulls struggling to find consistency this season, sixth-grade student athletes at William K. New Sullivan Elementary School have taken it upon themselves to ensure the city has at least one good basketball team this year. While growing up immersed in Chicago’s rich basketball history and culture may have influenced each student’s decision to join the boys basketball team, for Malik D., the thrill of the game was already enough to get him to sign up. 

“I joined the basketball team because I like being an athlete and I watch a lot of basketball,” said Malik, while his teammate, Isaiah R., added that he liked the sport because he likes shooting and showing off his skills.

Under the leadership of Quentine Carradine, first-year coach and a special education classroom assistant at New Sullivan, the team hasn’t lost a game yet this season. Team members believe that their victory streak stems from their selflessness in passing the ball and finding open shots for their teammates. 

“Our team’s biggest strength is scoring; it’s not that hard to score with teamwork,” said team member Brent K. 

“When we see each other passing the ball down the court, we can easily score.” agreed Malik.

Even though they work together as one unit on the basketball court, each student has been inspired by a different NBA star and has a different favorite team to watch. While Brent was captivated by Derrick Rose’s speed growing up, he has spent this season watching Luka Dončić lead the Dallas Mavericks. Malik gets inspiration watching Kyrie Irving’s footwork and handles. Teammates Jeremy W. and Jumari H. are big fans of Stephen Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo. And Coach Carradine says no one can top the Los Angeles Clippers because of the “beast” who is Kawhi Leonard. 

One thing the team can all agree on, however, is Kobe Bryant’s permanent impact on the sport they love playing. 

“Even though I’m sad, I know that Kobe did everything that he had to do in the NBA,” said Brent. 

“We have to live our lives to the fullest like Kobe,” chimed in Malik.

For the first time in their lives, the team will get to watch Luca, Giannis, Kawhi, and the rest of the NBA’s top talent come to Chicago for the NBA All-Star Game. The NBA has partnered with CPS to celebrate healthy eating, mindfulness, and, of course, basketball, through various activations leading up to the game. 

While the NBA season heats up, things are winding down for coach Carradine and his players, who will officially wrap up their season later this month. Coach Carradine says he’s been especially impressed by the strides his team has made in improving their defense tactics, and he’s excited to hopefully coach the same group of students next year on the seventh- and eighth-grade team to help them continue to refine their skills. 

“I’m looking forward to next year. We have to improve on a lot of little areas, but I think it’ll be well worth it,” coach Carradine said. “On defense, they tend to chase people around, so I’m trying to teach them to guard a certain area of the court, and they’re getting it.” 

In addition to using his expertise to guide his players on the basketball court, coach Carradine is also a proponent of prioritizing academics. He believes that being a mentor who makes sure the team is staying on track in the classroom is one of his many responsibilities as a coach. 

“I always stress to my players that you’re a student first before you’re an athlete—that’s why they’re called student athletes,” he said. “If their teacher says that they haven’t done their work, there’s no negotiating, they need to get that work done before they can do anything else.” 

While most of the team has aspirations to play basketball beyond elementary school, their time at New Sullivan is also encouraging them to think critically about what they want to achieve that can’t be measured in points, rebounds, or assists. Isaiah, for example, wants to play basketball in high school and then go to college to become a dentist. 

No matter if Isaiah ends up using a basketball or a dental mirror to impact the world, his elementary school experiences are preparing him to make his mark.

“Cuando vemos que cada uno pasa el balón por la cancha, podemos marcar fácilmente”, concordó Malik.

Aunque los estudiantes trabajan juntos como un equipo en la cancha, todos se inspiraron por una estrella de la NBA distinta, y ven los partidos de sus distintos equipos favoritos. Aunque cuando era niño a Brent le cautivaba la velocidad de Derrick Rose, esta temporada ha visto a Luka Dončić liderar al equipo Dallas Mavericks. Malik se inspira viendo los movimientos de pies y manejo del balón de Kyrie Irving. Jeremy W. y Jumari H. son grandes fanes de Stephen Curry y Giannis Antetokounmpo. Y el entrenador Carradine dice que nadie puede superar al equipo Los Angeles Clippers por el jugador Kawhi Leonard, conocido como la “bestia”. 

 Sin embargo, algo que todos del equipo pueden estar de acuerdo es en el impacto permanente que Kobe Bryant ha tenido en su deporte favorito. 

“Aunque estoy triste, sé que Kobe hizo todo lo que tenía que hacer en la NBA”, dijo Brent. 

“Tenemos que vivir nuestras vidas al máximo como Kobe”, dijo Malik. 

Por primera vez en sus vidas, el equipo podrá ver a Luca, Giannis, Kawhi y otros jugadores talentosos de la NBA en el partido All-Star de la NBA en Chicago. La NBA ha colaborado con la CPS para promover la alimentación sana, la consciencia plena y, por supuesto, el baloncesto, a través de varios eventos ante del partido. 

Mientras la temporada de la NBA se vuelve más competitiva, se acabarán los partidos para el entrenador Carradine y sus jugadores, que terminarán oficialmente su temporada a finales de este mes. El entrenador Carradine dice que le ha impresionado mucho que su equipo haya mejorado sus tácticas de defensa, y espera que el próximo año pueda entrenar al mismo grupo de estudiantes en el equipo de séptimo y octavo grado a fin de ayudarles a seguir perfeccionando sus habilidades. 

“Espero con ansias el próximo año. Tenemos que mejorar en muchos ámbitos pequeños, pero creo que valdrá la pena”, dijo. “En la posición defensiva, tienden a perseguir a la gente, así que estoy tratando de enseñarles a vigilar ciertas zonas de la cancha, y sí están aprendiendo”. 

Además de usar su experiencia para guiar a sus jugadores en la cancha, el entrenador Carradine también prioriza lo académico. Cree que una de sus muchas responsabilidades como entrenador consiste en ser un mentor que se asegura de que el equipo se mantenga enfocado en lo académico. 

“Siempre les enfatizo a mis jugadores que primero tienen ser un estudiante y luego un atleta, por eso se les llama estudiantes atletas”, dijo. “Si su maestro dice que no han hecho su trabajo escolar, no pueden hacer nada más que terminarlo antes de hacer cualquier otra cosa”. 

Mientras que la mayoría del equipo tiene aspiraciones al baloncesto después de la primaria, su experiencia en la escuela también los anima a pensar críticamente sobre los logros que no se pueden medir en puntos, rebotes o asistencias. Por ejemplo, Isaiah quiere practicar el baloncesto en la secundaria, y luego cursar la universidad para convertirse en dentista. 

No importa si al final Isaiah usa un balón de baloncesto o un espejo dental para crear un impacto positivo en el mundo, sus experiencias en la primaria lo preparan para dejar su huella.
