Actionable case counts represent the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases associated with CPS buildings. Case counts are not a measure of transmission in schools and numerous studies have shown that schools are not sites of significant COVID-19 transmission.

Staff Surveillance Testing
This information corresponds to the 2020-21 school year and is no longer being updated. Refer to the COVID-19 Data for SY21-22 page for new information.
During the 2020-21 school year CPS, implemented a voluntary COVID-19 surveillance testing program for school-based staff. Surveillance testing is used to measure and monitor the prevalence of COVID-19 among asymptomatic staff in our schools. On a weekly basis, 25 percent of staff were tested, and all staff were instructed to expect to be offered testing at least once per month.
Our surveillance testing program adds an additional tool to the strict health protocols we've put in place to help the district make informed decisions about keeping staff and students healthy. Learn more about the district’s surveillance testing strategy and find answers to frequently asked questions in the COVID-19 Testing Handbook.

Student COVID-19 Screening Testing
This information corresponds to the 2020-21 school year and is no longer being updated. Refer to the COVID-19 Data for SY21-22 page for new information.
During the 202-21 school year, CPS implemented a voluntary COVID-19 screening program for students age 10 and up who attend special education cluster programs or who attend schools in the 10 zip codes with the highest COVID-19 rates. Those zip codes were updated monthly, based on data from the Chicago Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 Dashboard. All students under the age of 18 must have their parent or guardian consent prior to being tested.
Screening testing is used to measure and monitor the prevalence of COVID-19 among asymptomatic students in our schools. On a weekly basis, 25 percent of students at each eligible school were randomly selected for testing. Both positive and negative results were shared with parents or guardians within 72 hours. All positive results were shared with the district for contact tracing. Positive results are reflected in the actionable table above.
