Specially Designed Instruction

A personalized approach to teaching created by special education teachers or service providers to meet the unique learning needs of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Unlike general classroom adjustments (or differentiation), specially designed instruction involves adapting the content, teaching methods, or delivery of instruction to support students' specific academic, behavioral, and social goals. This instruction is crafted to ensure students have access to and can progress within the general education curriculum—and, when appropriate, advanced curriculum—by addressing their unique needs as outlined in their IEPs. To achieve this, teachers receive training and guidance from the district, so they can effectively support student growth in targeted areas.
