End of Week Message: Providing Safety with a Smile

Dear CPS Colleagues, Families, and Supporters,
The first few weeks of any school year are about getting to know each other. For some of our students, this begins in the classroom. But for others, it starts blocks away when they meet their Safe Passage Workers on the way to school.
What started 15 years ago in a handful of communities now positively impacts thousands of children in 191 schools. And this week, we were able to say thank you!
It was my honor to join Mayor Johnson in celebrating the nearly 1,200 community members who make up our District’s Safe Passage Program. These dedicated adults line the streets of our highest-need communities daily to make sure students can travel safely to and from school.
They also provide our students with a warm smile, a kind word, and the assurance that there is another adult out there who is looking out for them and who wants to see them succeed.
I thank our Safe Passage Workers for showing up day in and day out, no matter the weather, to give our students a positive start and end to their day. They are critical to our mission of providing students with the safe, positive experience they deserve, and we are lucky to count them among our CPS family.
I also want to thank U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona for visiting Chicago as part of the Back-to-School Bus Tour that is taking him around the country this week.
Last fall, Secretary Cardona joined CPS for an event celebrating some of our District’s most impressive milestones, including our record-breaking graduation rate, the growing number of students enrolled in Early College and Career programming, and the fact that our graduates had earned more than $2 billion in college scholarships.
Secretary Cardona was very complimentary of our District during that 2023 celebration. He praised CPS for investing COVID-19 relief funds in such a way that we were able to raise the bar academically while creating new systems of support for students’ emotional health and well-being. We were grateful for his words then, and were excited to welcome him to Chicago again this school year.
With two weeks of school now behind us, I urge everyone to begin really settling in and getting down to the business of learning. Let’s make this our most successful school year yet!

A Look Around the District
Schools across CPS are off to a great start this year!
Students and staff at Peterson Elementary, located in the city’s North Park neighborhood, celebrated the first week of class with various STEAM activities, from building mini-museum items to participating in an egg drop challenge.
At Walter Payton High School on the Near North Side, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias unveiled a new Organ Donor Ambassador Program in honor of Chicago Bears great Walter Payton, who passed away from cancer, but whose life might have been saved by an organ transplant. The goal of this event was to emphasize the importance of organ donation and inspire young people to educate their communities about giving the gift of life.
Finally, we are excited to highlight Palmer Elementary in North Mayfair for recently being named a Muti-year All-Star School for America’s Healthiest Schools 2024. This award was presented to Palmer by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation for the second year in a row, recognizing students and staff for success in all 9 of the award’s topic areas. These include supporting school health services, improving nutrition and food access, strengthening social-emotional health and learning, and cultivating staff well-being. Congratulations Palmer Panthers!
Share Your Thoughts on the Future of Arts Education
The CPS Department of Arts Education is updating the District’s Arts Education Plan and we need your voice!
During the next few months, we will be hosting a series of focus groups and roundtable discussions for students, parents, teachers, school leaders, and arts partners. Each meeting will be an opportunity to share your experiences and aspirations for the future of arts education in the District.
Registration is required to participate in a focus group. Roundtable conversations do not require that you sign up in advance, but we always encourage it!

Estimadas familias, colegas y simpatizantes de las CPS:
Las primeras semanas de cualquier año escolar son para conocerse el uno al otro. Para algunos de nuestros estudiantes, esto comienza en el aula, pero para otros, comienza a unas cuadras de distancia cuando se encuentran, de camino a la escuela, con los trabajadores de Safe Passage.
Lo que comenzó hace quince años en unas cuantas comunidades ahora impacta positivamente a miles de niños en 191 escuelas. ¡Y esta semana logramos darles las gracias!
Fue todo un honor unirme al alcalde Johnson para celebrar a los casi 1,200 miembros de la comunidad que forman parte del Programa Safe Passage. Estos adultos dedicados se posicionan cada día en las calles de nuestras comunidades más necesitadas para asegurar que los estudiantes puedan ir a la escuela y regresar de ella seguramente.
También dan a los estudiantes una cálida sonrisa, unas palabras alentadoras, y la seguridad de que existe otro adulto en su vida que les cuida y quiere verles alcanzar el éxito.
Agradezco a nuestros trabajadores de Safe Passage por estar ahí todos los días, sin importar el tiempo, para darles a nuestros estudiantes un comienzo y un final positivo a sus días. Son esenciales para nuestra misión de darles a nuestros estudiantes la experiencia segura y positiva que merecen, y somos afortunados de incluirlos como parte de nuestra familia escolar aquí en las CPS.
También quiero agradecer al secretario de Educación de los Estados Unidos, Miguel Cardona, por visitar Chicago como parte del tour de autobús de regreso a clases que esta semana lo lleva por todo el país.
El otoño pasado, el secretario Cardona se unió a las CPS para participar en un evento que celebraba algunos de los logros más impresionantes de nuestro Distrito, como nuestra tasa de graduaciones récord, el número creciente de estudiantes inscritos en programación preuniversitaria y profesional, y el hecho de que nuestros graduandos habían obtenido más de $2 mil millones en becas universitaria.
El secretario Cardona tuvo muchas cosas buenas que decir sobre nuestro Distrito. Elogió a las CPS por invertir los fondos de alivio de COVID-19 para que pudiéramos alzar las expectativas en cuanto a los logros académicos, a la misma vez que creábamos nuevos sistemas de apoyo para la salud y bienestar emocionales de los estudiantes. Agradecimos sus palabras entonces, y nos complació darle la bienvenida de vuelta a Chicago este año.
Ya que han pasado dos semanas de clase, les exhorto a todos a acomodarse y prepararse para realmente aprender. ¡Hagamos éste nuestro año escolar más exitoso!

¡Las escuelas del Distrito han dado un gran comienzo al año escolar!
El estudiantado y el personal de la Escuela Primaria Peterson, en el barrio North Park, celebraron la primera semana de clases con varias actividades de CTIAM, como construir miniartículos de museo y participar en un reto de caída de huevos.
En la Escuela Secundaria Walter Payton, en el Near North Side, el secretario de estado de Illinois, Alexi Giannoulias, presentó el nuevo programa Organ Donor Ambassador en la escuela, como homenaje a Walter Payton, el famoso jugador de futbol americano que formó parte de los Chicago Bears y murió de cáncer, pero cuya vida podría haber sido salvada con un trasplante de órganos. La meta de este evento era enfatizar la importancia de la donación de órganos e inspirar a los jóvenes a educar a sus comunidades sobre el regalo de la vida y cómo darlo.
Finalmente, nos complace resaltar a la Escuela Primaria Palmer, en North Mayfair, por recientemente ser nombrada Multi-year All-Star School for America’s Healthiest Schools para el 2024, un premio por la Alliance for a Healthier Generation. El premio fue otorgado a Palmer por segundo año consecutivo, y reconoció al estudiantado y personal escolares por su éxito en las nueve áreas del premio. Éstas áreas incluyen el respaldo a servicios de salud escolares, el mejoramiento de la nutrición y el acceso a la comida, el fortalecimiento de la salud socioemocional y el aprendizaje, y la cultivación del bienestar del personal. ¡Felicitaciones, panteras de Palmer!
Compartan sus ideas sobre el futuro de la educación artística
¡El Departamento de Educación Artística de las CPS está actualizando el Plan de Educación Artística del Distrito, y necesitamos de sus voces!
Durante los próximos meses tendremos una serie de grupos de enfoque y mesas redondas para estudiantes, padres, maestros, líderes escolares y colaboradores artísticos. Cada reunión presentará una oportunidad para compartir sus experiencias y sus esperanzas para el futuro de la educación artística en el Distrito.
Necesitarán inscribirse para participar en un grupo de enfoque. Las mesas redondas no requieren inscripción adelantada, ¡pero siempre la recomendamos!
