Dear CPS Colleagues, Families, and Supporters,
This weekend is the last chance for CPS students to complete GoCPS applications for the 2025–26 school year!
The application deadline for GoCPS is Sunday, December 15, 2024 at 5 p.m.
Families—please visit the GoCPS website to explore your options and complete your application by the December 15 deadline!
Expanding Transportation to More CPS Students
I’m excited to share that CPS has now launched the first phase of our Hub Stop Pilot Program! This is an initiative where certain CPS schools act as pick-up and drop-off points for general education students who are eligible for bus transportation.
This week, we officially opened hub stops at 35 CPS schools. These hub stops were selected using the CPS Opportunity Index, a tool that is helping us prioritize transportation for students who face significant barriers to opportunity.
Our first collection of hub stops is able to serve more than 300 general education students, and our plan is to add more stops as capacity allows, always being sure to prioritize our students with the greatest socio-economic needs.
I thank our CPS Transportation Team for their work making this initial launch a success, as well as the bus monitors who have been on hand each day to answer parents’ questions and direct students to the correct buses. I also want to thank the staff and communities at our hub stop schools for welcoming new families to their campuses and assisting us during this transition.
We are excited that the Hub Stop Program is underway, and we will continue working to provide bus transportation to as many students as possible as the school year continues.
Winter Break Resources for Students
Winter break is only a week away, and I know that everyone is looking forward to holiday celebrations and time spent with family and friends. But we want to make sure our students stay safe and engaged during their break from school. Some of these opportunities include:
- Safe Haven Sites. One great option is our Safe Haven Sites, many of which will be open throughout winter break. These are welcoming environments where kids can stay warm and have fun with their peers at no cost. I encourage all of our families to visit the CPS website for locations and schedules of our Safe Haven Sites.
- Chicago Park District Winter Camps. Our partners at the Chicago Park District are also hosting several winter break camps for students. Families can get more information and sign up at the Chicago Park District website.
- My CHI. My Future. Winter Kickbacks. Students can join community partners for dozens of fun and exciting events across Chicago from now through January 6, 2025. Download the My CHI. My Future. app or visit their website to search for activities by neighborhood.
I know that many of our schools have holiday celebrations planned for next week—I hope everyone enjoys these festive events while finishing this last week of classes strong!
Sincerely,
Pedro Martinez

New Sensory Room at South Shore Fine Arts Academy
This week, CPS cut the ribbon on the District’s latest sensory room at South Shore Fine Arts Academy. This is one of 22 such rooms serving 1,500 students with disabilities this year throughout CPS. Sensory rooms are calming, supportive spaces where students in the District’s cluster programs can focus, self-regulate, and improve their sensory processing skills while also developing improved coping skills. We thank Special Children’s Charities and the Children First Fund for working together to make these sensory rooms possible.
Kellyn Acosta Foundation Donates Books to Piccolo Elementary
Thanks to a foundation created by Chicago Fire FC player Kellyn Acosta, more than 450 books were donated this week to Piccolo Elementary School. These books were collected through a Back-to-School book drive organized in collaboration with the Children First Fund. Thank you to Kellyn Acosta and his team for spearheading this donation, and for meeting with middle school students at Piccolo.
ProgramBridge Update
ProgramBRIDGE is our District’s ongoing effort to modernize our information systems and transition to an Oracle Fusion Cloud solution. This month’s issue looks closely at the groundwork that’s been laid for the district’s transitional journey to an Oracle Fusion Cloud system. In addition, we begin two new features:
- A profile series on our Change Champions network, starting with Teena Lorie Harris, who serves as Executive Director and steward leader for the District’s Office of Business Diversity; and
- “Know Your Cloud” terms, which explains specific tech terms that we all need to know in order to understand our transformation.
You can find out more about ProgramBRIDGE on our new intranet page. Access it here!
Taking Care of Your Mental Health During the Holidays
According to UChicago Medicine, about 5% of the U.S. population experiences Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). In addition, a 2021 survey from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) showed that 3 in 5 Americans feel their mental health is negatively impacted by the holidays. To support CPS students, staff, and families during this time, the Office of Student Health and Wellness’ Mental Health Team has created this resource on SAD, holiday mental health support, and local warming and meal sites. Please also feel free to contact mentalhealth@cps.edu with any questions.
