Local School Councils (LSCs)

In the city of Chicago, Local School Councils serve as a governing body for each district-managed school in CPS. LSCs help to propel our schools forward by inviting valuable collaboration from parents, community members, students and staff.

The LSC Reference Guide is designed to provide LSC members with the information, resources, and tools necessary to navigate their roles effectively. The 2024 guide has been updated with several one-page summaries of various areas of work, including  summaries of all of our training modules and summaries of the Open Meetings Act, LSC Committees, and Robert's Rules of Order.

About Local School Councils

Comprised of parents, community, educational, and student members, LSCs serve as an important vehicle for participatory democracy, providing a wide variety of stakeholders an opportunity to make important decisions about how students in their communities will be educated. 

Local School Councils are responsible for:

  • Approving the school based academic plan (CIWP)
  • Approving the alignment of budgetary resources to the CIWP
  • Engaging in the annual evaluation of contract principal’s professional practices
  • Selecting or renewing contract principals
