Site constraints, roof structure, noise and costs shall be considered when selecting unit location. Unit locations may have to change to comply with current code and requirements throughout the CPS Master design guide / specifications.
Units shall be sufficiently away from the edge of the building for safety and visibility issues (minimum 10’-0”). Where 10’-0” or greater cannot be maintained obtain approval from CPS on a project/unit specific basis to utilize safety guard rails. Provide site line study for approval by CPS. Access harness tie down solutions shall not be utilized. Any unit mounted greater than 30” above roof level to be reviewed with CPS for proper access to the unit. A structural platform may be required.
For outdoor AHU / RTU replacement, especially multi-zone unit replacement, the weight of the unit and the existing structure needs to be evaluated for structural / wind / snow load requirements. CPS has been finding the new units require higher efficiencies, potentially energy recovery per code or project energy goals and are larger and heavier than the existing units. Where possible, outdoor multi-zones shall be converted from constant volume multi-zone to variable volume multi-zone for energy reduction and better comfort.
Verify that the unit has proper clearance for outdoor air intake, exhaust air discharge, maintenance access for potential pulling of coils, fans, wheels and proper cleaning.
Refer to Volume 3, Chapter 6 for additional requirements. Refer to 6.3.6 for Building Controls.
