Service and loading zones are an important operational consideration in the design of school sites. Early in the design process, CPS shall coordinate with refuse collection companies, delivery companies, and other users of service yards to confirm type of dumpsters needed and typical vehicles to be accommodated. To the greatest extent possible, these areas shall not interfere with typical school programming and function.
Circulation
Service and loading areas shall be designed to allow for primary access from a street or alley without excessive maneuvering.
Sizing and Design
Loading zones shall be placed within the public way only if the site does have adequate space to accommodate it within the properly boundary. Loading zones shall also be sized based on typical vehicle use and shall not block the sidewalk during loading and unloading.
Service Yards and Enclosures
- Service yards and enclosures shall comply with the City of Chicago Landscape Ordinance with respect to material selection, gates, dimensions, and screening.
- Trash enclosures at existing CPS schools may be chain link fence with slats, however all new trash enclosures shall be masonry on an 8 inch thick concrete slab.
- Enclosure gates shall not pass or overlap the property line. Every effort shall be made to set them back from the property line.
- If space or site conditions do not allow that, the designer shall coordinate the design and logistics with all agencies having jurisdiction.
