1.3.8 Bicycle Parking and Access

Bicyclists, like pedestrians, rely on thoughtful design strategies to provide access from public ways to school sites. CPS values this mode of transit and strives to implement safe bike infrastructure on their sites.

Bicycle Access

It is preferred that bicycle paths are situated on their own pathway, and are separated from automobile traffic and sidewalks. Directional striping or signs shall be included on bike paths. Where a bike pathway is included in the same roadway as other vehicles, bike lane striping will be required. Bicycle paths shall connect the school bike parking with all possible bicycle site entrances.

Bicycle Parking Area

Provide bicycle storage for at least 5% of all regular building occupants, but no fewer than four (4) spaces per building. The specific number of bicycle parking spaces will be determined on an individual project basis, and shall be coordinated with CPS and the Chicago Department of Planning and Development.

Bicycle parking shall be located securely in an area of high supervision within 200 yards of a building entrance and within 200 yards of a bicycle network that connects to either a bus rapid transit stop or passenger rail station or 50% of the dwelling units within the school’s attendance boundary. A bicycle network is defined by any combination of the following:

  • Off street bicycle paths or trails at least 8 feet wide for a two-way path and at least 5 feet wide for a one-way path
  • Physically designated on-street bicycle lanes at least 5 feet wide
  • Streets designed for a target speed of 25 mph or less.
