4.7.4 Strength Training/Fitness Room

Planning Rationale

The Strength Training/Fitness Room is a Physical Education teaching station as well as an athletic support space.

Design Considerations

Location

This space shall be located in close proximity to the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium and Locker Rooms. When required, it may be located on a different floor than the Gymnatorium/Gymnasium if vertical circulation between the two spaces is nearby.

Layout

This space shall include a primary teaching wall, mirrored wall, furniture based storage, several pieces of equipment, and enough open space for activities not requiring equipment.

  • Equipment: The room shall include adequate space for circulation and safe use of the cardiovascular and strength training equipment. Clearance and power is required at each piece of equipment.
  • Mirrors: One wall shall have mirrors on the full length of the room. If natural daylight occurs within this room, coordinate mirror location to minimize glare.
  • Teaching Wall: Provide a markerboard and two (2) tack surfaces along one wall as a standard teaching wall. Refer to 4.1.1 Grades 9-12 Classroom for additional requirements.
  • Storage: Furniture based storage shall be provided for equipment and accessories within the room.
  • Drinking Fountains: Provide in close proximity to this space.
