1.3 Site Access, Circulation and Parking

Security, visibility, and separation of vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic are crucial components to site design. The site layout shall be developed so that students shall not pass through parking spaces or driveways to reach an entrance. Bicycle amenities shall also be visible and accessible from the road. Bus drop-off shall be designated separately from parent drop-off. Parking lots are primarily intended to serve employees and support after-hours activities. Delivery drop off areas, trash, and recycling enclosures shall be located near the kitchen, away from main student entrances, and not visible from the street. CPS properties, upon school approval, may be used by the community during weekends and weekday evenings for athletics. Access and parking shall consider these uses in addition to school needs.

Refer to Volume 3 Section 3.5 Operations for more information on dock, recycling, and compactor enclosures. Refer to the City of Chicago Landscape Ordinance.
