Millwork categories include custom fabricated assemblies, manufactured casework, and laboratory casework. Casework in each school shall primarily be base and sink cabinets with upper cabinets provided only in a few select cases. CPS has moved toward furniture based solutions in recent years to promote future flexibility. CPS has established AWI Premium as the millwork quality standard. CPS has standardized dimensions for casework utilized in the following but not all inclusive spaces such as science labs, science prep rooms, Pre-K/K classrooms, select staff areas, and rooms with sink cabinets. Heights vary depending on age ranges served and universal design is preferred over customized heights for specific ADA stations. Refer to ADA drawings and CPS specifications for complete description of construction requirements.
Custom fabricated assemblies are often used at administrative suite reception counter, nurse’s station, security station, pantries and/or teacher’s lounge, and other special function areas. Alternatively, there are furniture based solutions for security stations, reception, and other select locations.
Manufactured casework is utilized for rooms with sink bases, administration mail room/workrooms, and select staff areas.
Laboratory casework is utilized in science labs and science prep rooms.
<>Accessibility
Typically casework shall be designed for a side approach at sinks. Height of cabinets and counters shall conform to age groups as identified on the ADA Standard Detail Sheets and comply with required accessibility codes.
Millwork Construction
All casework shall typically be high pressure plastic laminate for all exposed surfaces unless indicated otherwise within each section. When wood is used, solid hard wood is typically used for side and end panels, door and drawer faces. Wood veneer shall not be used for counter surfaces. At areas prone to damage, solid hard wood detailing shall be employed. All exposed edges to be solid hardwood.
Interior Shelves
Adjustable shelving shall be provided within all base and wall cabinets.
Substrate Material
Shall be FSC certified, formaldehyde free and low or no VOC.
Adhesives
Low VOC adhesive shall be used.
Counters
Material is dependent upon the function of the space. Solid surface material is required at all wet areas where there is a sink as well as high impact areas; plastic laminate counters to be used only in dry areas. Epoxy to be utilized in science classrooms.
Counters with sinks
Integral 18” minimum high backsplash material to match the sink countertop. Science classrooms to have epoxy counter with integral sink and backsplash.
Under Sink Equipment
Solid Interceptors, acid neutralizing basins and grease interceptors as indicated for specific locations are to be located directly under the sinks or within the cabinet immediately adjacent. Refer to the ADA details for required clearances.
Exterior/high humidity area
Items such as benches are to use composite wood/plastic material, non-treated naturally water resistant solid wood varieties such as teak or aluminum.
