Compliance Review
An initial step in the design process shall be a review of existing conditions within and adjacent to the project area. This review shall identify potential permitting requirements, zoning requirements, minimum existing site requirements, or code compliance issues that might impact the project scope. If compliance issues are identified, the initial programming and preliminary design shall be revisited to identify possible solutions. These solutions may include an expansion of the project scope or revisions to the project area, which shall be reviewed and approved by CPS prior to implementation.
ROW / Off-Site Work
Any work within the public right-of-way (ROW) required as part of the project scope or identified as part of a compliance review shall meet all applicable City of Chicago codes/regulations/standards. Examples may include the installation of ADA curb ramp layouts, driveway/alley reconstruction, or the installation/replacement of missing parkway trees. The verification of all accessible curb cuts at all intersections surrounding the school shall be part of the design. Verification shall be coordinated with CDOT. Refer to the City of Chicago Rules Regarding Construction in the Public Way for more information on work within the ROW.
Salvaged Materials
The AOR/EOR shall consult with CPS and representatives of the individual school (e.g. Principal) in order to identify and confirm any existing items or materials to be salvaged and reused as part of the new design. These items shall be clearly identified in the construction drawings and have a temporary storage location noted.
Examples of acceptable salvaged materials include:
- Decorative/Ornamental fencing
- Benches or other site furniture
- Artwork
- Sports field equipment such as goal posts
- Trees/plants
- Other site amenities
Unacceptable salvaged materials include:
- Avoid using reclaimed materials from non CPS sites in all CPS gardens, no matter the type (i.e. pallets, tires, railroad ties, etc.)
- Wood materials manufactured before laws banning CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate)
