Neighborhood Programs K-8

Every Chicago address is assigned a neighborhood elementary school where students are guaranteed a seat without going through the GoCPS application process. For elementary school, this is usually an open enrollment or magnet cluster program. Families should be prepared to show proof of residency if they are interested in attending these programs.

Enrolling in Kindergarten

If your child is attending a Pre-K program at your neighborhood schools you do not need to apply through GoCPS in order to continue in the open enrollment or magnet cluster program for kindergarten.

GoCPS Programs in Neighborhood Schools

It’s possible that your neighborhood schools offers additional GoCPS programs in addition to guaranteed programs. To be considered for any GoCPS program, including those hosted at your neighborhood school, a GoCPS application is required, and admission is not guaranteed. You can find this information under the Admissions tab in each school's profile page.

School Search Tool

Open Enrollment

Students must complete a GoCPS application for any program outside of their neighborhood school's guaranteed program, including open enrollment or magnet cluster programs at schools not in their attendance area.

Pre-K Program: If your child is attending a Pre-K program that is NOT your neighborhood school, you MUST submit a GoCPS application to be considered for kindergarten at that school. No preference is given to current PreK students. Exceptions: Pre-K students enrolled at Drummond Elementary School, Suder Elementary School, and Inter-American Elementary School can continue attending kindergarten without submitting a GoCPS application.

Address Change

If your child plans to attend the designated neighborhood program your child must still live at that address when they enroll in the school, and you must provide valid proof of residency. If your home address changes to outside a school’s boundaries before your child is enrolled, students will have a new neighborhood program. Contact the new school to enroll.

Automatic Enrollment

Once a student is enrolled at their neighborhood school, they are automatically re-enrolled for the next school year as long as they have not accepted a GoCPS offer to another program. Let the school know if your child’s address changes after enrolling. If a student’s address changes after they were enrolled as a neighborhood student, it will be up to the school on whether the student can continue in that neighborhood school until graduation. All students in grades 7-12 will be able to stay until graduation regardless.
