When Chicago City Treasurer Stephanie D. Neely walked into a Harlan High School, 9652 S. Michigan, classroom last month, students didn’t know what to think.
The city treasurer was there to award one special student with a scholarship check worth $1,000.
The student won a Black History Month scholarship based on an essay she wrote and recommendations from her teachers. Her essay of optimism and hope was chosen as the winner from among dozens of applicants throughout the city.
