CPS Parents Encouraged to Attend EXPO 6.0

Talk with Leaders From More Than 100 Elementary and High Schools!

November 19, 2012

Parents, guardians, students and community members are invited to learn more about Chicago's public school options, including charter schools, by attending the New Schools EXPO 6.0, presented by New Schools for Chicago and Chicago Public Schools.

The event takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8. It will be held indoors at Soldier Field (United Club Level One, 1410 South Museum Campus Drive). Admission to the EXPO is free, and free indoor parking is available. If you plan on taking the CTA, a free trolley service between the Roosevelt CTA "L" station and the stadium is available.

At the EXPO, you'll be able to receive one-on-one help navigating the school-choice system, talk with leaders from more than 100 elementary and high schools, and complete enrollment forms on the spot, well in advance of enrollment deadlines. The EXPO brings together a wide range of options all in one place, allowing families to find the school that best fit their needs. One such parent is Karen Henderson, who attended last year’s EXPO to find the right school for her son.

“I wanted a school with small class size and male mentoring,” said Henderson. “And a school that will shift his focus from playing sports to getting into a good college.” Henderson and her son found the right match at the EXPO.

If you plan to apply to schools directly on-site at the EXPO, you are strongly encouraged to bring photo copies of the following identification items with you:

  • Parent/guardian license or ID card (not valid for proof of residency)
  • Parent/guardian proof of Chicago residency (i.e., utility bill, mortgage, medical card, bank statement, check card, voter registration card. No rental leases or cell phone bills accepted)

Many participating schools require this information when applying to prove that you and your child reside in Chicago. Without these items you may not be able to fully complete an application at the event.

New to the EXPO this year is techNOW, where you’ll find products and programs – many free or low-cost – that can help your child learn more now, both at home and in the classroom.
