Two CPS teachers named Heroes in the Classroom

Schurz, Von Linne teachers honored by Symetra Finance and Chicago Bears

November 17, 2011

Both Kevin Rutter, a finance teacher at Carl Schurz High School, and Eufrosina Delgado Arroyo, a bilingual second grade teacher at Carl Von Linne Elementary School, regularly go beyond the call of duty in their work. Their commitment was recognized recently when they were named Symetra Finance/Chicago Bears Heroes in the Classroom. Symetra Heroes in the Classroom Opens in a new window icon, presented by Gallagher Benefit Services, is a community program that annually recognizes 16 Chicago-area teachers for outstanding leadership and instructional skills during the Chicago Bears season.

Symetra made a $1,000 donation to the teachers’ classrooms. In addition, both received two tickets to a Bears regular season game, recognition on the scoreboard during the game and a visit to the sidelines prior to the start of the game.

About the winners: According to her fellow teachers and principal, Delgado Arroyo has consistently done an exemplary job, not only instilling her students with the love of reading and writing in the English language, but also with critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.  All the while she encourages her students to honor and cherish their Hispanic heritage. Ms. Delgado Arroyo counts Johnny Knox and Devin Hester as her favorite Bears’ players.

Rutter is no stranger to being honored for his work in the classroom as he was named the Illinois Teacher of the Year in 2009.  In addition to teaching finance, Rutter teaches and coordinates a Careers and Technical Education Opens in a new window icon (CTE) program known as the Schurz High School Academy of Finance Opens in a new window icon (AOF). Chartered by CPS and the National Academy Foundation, the three-year program is designed to teach fundamental business principles by providing students with experiential learning opportunities, professional service career exposure, and connections to top corporate, government, non-profit and post-secondary institutions. More than 90 percent of Schurz AOF students are attending post-secondary institutions and half of them have received scholarships.  Rutter named Dan Hampton as his favorite Bears’ player.

Students interested in enrolling in a program like Schurz’s Academy of Finance, can apply here Opens in a new window icon.  Applications are due by Dec. 16, 2011.
