Whitney Young students win the Chase Urban Debate National Championship

July 12, 2010

Whitney M. Young Magnet High School’s debate team has been recognized as the first team in the Urban Debate League to win the Chase Urban Debate National Championship.  Led by seniors Misael Gonzalez and Kevin Hirn, Young was crowned champions after defeating Rowland High School of Salt Lake City, Utah in New York City, April 22-25, 2010.

This considerable achievement capped off an amazing year for the Whitney Young debate team which also was victorious at the Chicago Debate Championship, University of Michigan Round Robin, and Valley Mid-America Cup.  The Whitney Young debate team was not only the most successful team in Chicago, but also in Illinois and the entire country.

Debate coach Jeff Scheur said he was very excited and honored to work with such talented kids. He noted that Gonzalez, who will be attending Trinity University in San Antonio, is the classic role model student as well as the head of the school’s student council, and he described Hirn as a veracious worker. Hirn, who will be attending Wake Forest University in North Carolina, was also recognized as the top speaker at the Chase National Urban Debate League Tournament.

Meanwhile, other CPS students shone at the Championships—Carl Jiang and Chemine Okere from Albert G. Lane Technical College Preparatory High School where named semi-finalists in the competition.  CPS congratulates the outstanding achievements by our students and facility.
