Three Neighborhood Advisory Councils (NACs) are holding community forums to continue a comprehensive community engagement process regarding proposals for new schools. NACs are in the process of reviewing proposals for new charter and contract schools that could open in the 2015-16 School Year. The annual request for new schools is mandated by Illinois Charter School Law.
“CPS is committed to working with families and communities to determine which new school proposals present the best options to prepare our students for success,” said CEO Forrest Claypool. “These forums allow community members to ask questions and get information on charter proposals, and in turn help form the opinions of NAC members, who will ultimately provide valuable feedback to the District and the Board of Education.”
NAC members serve as liaisons between the District, prospective charter applicants and the communities they represent. Their role is to ensure that all new charter and contract school proposals provide students and families with high-quality education options that correspond with a community’s specific academic needs.
Community forums allow members of the community to learn more about the NAC process and to hear about initial review findings directly from the members themselves. The applicants will have an opportunity to speak directly to community members as well as the NAC members. In addition, there will be a limited time for members of the community to ask questions to the NAC members, the applicants, and CPS staff, in addition to submitting written comments.

Two additional opportunities for community input will be made during Community meetings in early September and at an official Public Hearing at CPS at the end of September.
CPS made changes to the NAC process based on feedback it received from NAC participants in 2014. This year, NACs are led by independent facilitators to eliminate concerns about the District influencing the process.
