The 21 Chicago Multilingual Parent Council (CMPC) members advise on the development, implementation, and evaluation of Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) and Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI) programs for English Learners (ELs) at CPS and Charter schools serving the district.
Members represent the diversity of cultures, languages, and needs of the EL community. They serve a term of two years, and include:
- Nine parents/legal guardians elected by Bilingual Advisory Committees (BACs)
- Three parent/legal guardians at large appointment by the district
- Six community members appointed by the district
- Three bilingual educators appointed by the district
CMPC meetings are organized around meeting these goals:
- Making parents aware of and facilitate their participation in local committees pertaining to the needs of English Learners (ELs), other committees, and events related to bilingual/ESL education
- Identifying needs and determine priorities regarding education programs and ELs
- Facilitating communication among the multiethnic communities involved in EL educational programs
- Supporting and educating members of the local schools pertaining to any needs addressing the EL population
CMPC holds elections to determine delegates to serve for a two-year term. Voting takes place at local school BAC meetings in April.
