For the third consecutive year, CPS is partnering with Groupon to present the Kits for Kidz Campaign – a program that helps provide at-need students with the supplies they will need to be successful on their first day of school – Monday, August 26.
“Every child needs to begin the school year with the tools needed to succeed on day one,” said CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett. “Through this partnership with Groupon, Chicagoans have a unique opportunity to help thousands of our neediest students get the necessary school supplies that many families simply cannot afford.”
Purchasing school supplies can indeed be a challenge for CPS families, particularly those who qualify for free or reduced lunch or are in temporary living situations. But from July 25-31, individuals can lend support to these students by visiting the Groupon website – www.groupon.com/cps - and purchasing $5 Back to School supply kits. The kits will be distributed by CPS, and will include essential school supplies like notebooks, folders, pencils, pens, and rulers.

The partnership with Groupon is part of the District’s Back to School outreach plan, which aims to mobilize the city around CPS’ universal start date of Monday, August 26. This start date is for all CPS schools, and marks two significant changes for the District – the shift from a two-track system to a single calendar and the decision to begin school one week before Labor Day.
Last year, Chicagoans purchased school supplies for 1,200 students through the Kits for Kidz Campaign – a number organizers hope to surpass in 2013 as they work to send every CPS student to school confident and prepared on their first day - Monday, August 26.
“We are grateful for the support demonstrated during the first two years of the campaign and are tremendously excited to partner with the community to exceed our goals this year,” said CEO Byrd-Bennett.
