Last season the Chicago Debate League (CDL) joined the growing national movement toward extending urban debate programming into public middle schools, and the results so far have been impressive.
Nine elementary schools with more than 130 students in grades 5-8 participated in the second year of middle school debate in Chicago. This year's schools included:
- Alcott, 2625 N. Orchard St.
- Burke, 5356 S. King Dr.
- Frazier International, 4027 W. Grenshaw St.
- Kellogg, 9241 S. Leavitt St.
- Lincoln, 615 W. Kemper Pl.
- McCutcheon, 4865 N. Sheridan Rd.
- Morgan Park, 1744 W. Pryor Ave.
- Owen, 8247 S. Christiana Ave.
- Smyser, 4310 N. Melvina Ave.
The successful regular season concluded at the Chicago Middle School City Championship on March 7, at Brooks College Prep, 250 E. 111th St. Three rounds of competition culminated in a mid-afternoon Awards Ceremony.

Awards were also given to the individual top speaker in each division. The winners were Adriana from Smyser Elementary School (Varsity), Leah from Lincoln Elementary (Junior Varsity), and Elizabeth from Alcott Elementary (Novice).
