Chess masters square off

Elementary school students bring their best board moves to tournament.

March 03, 2009

Approximately 175 elementary school students from throughout the Chicago Public Schools gathered for a city-wide chess tournament on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. College Prep High School, 4445 S. Drexel Blvd.

Participants in the event had already emerged victorious from regional qualifying rounds in which about 600 young chess players participated.

The CPS elementary school chess program is growing annually, with more than 70 schools now having either chess clubs or teams. The young chess masters competed in four divisions: kindergarten, first and second grades; third and fourth grades; fifth and sixth grades; and seventh and eighth grades.

Competitions were scheduled for both teams and individuals. Six teams, as well as a number of individuals, qualified to compete in each division.
