Teacher wins national award

McKinley Park teacher represents Illinois as a star teacher.

February 09, 2009

CPS teacher Veronica Herrera recently was honored with a 2008 American Stars of Teaching award from the U.S. Department of Education Teacher Initiative. Only one teacher from each state was recognized, alongside four private school teachers.

Herrera is a bilingual education teacher at McKinley Park Elementary School, 2744 W. Pershing Road.

According to the United States Department of Education, American Stars recognizes and honors superior teachers with a track record of improving student achievement, using innovative instructional strategies and making a difference in the lives of their students.

The outstanding classroom teachers, across all grade levels and disciplines, received awards at special assemblies at the schools where the honored teachers work. Parents, students, colleagues, school administrators and others nominated these exemplary teachers, who they believe have the qualities to be an American Star of Teaching.
