This week the King College Prep Marching Band will head to Washington, D.C. to participate in this year's historic inauguration festivities.
King is the only Chicago Public School selected to play at the Presidential Inauguration Heritage Music Festival, which takes place January 16 – January 20 at the Harris Theater at George Mason University. The band has also submitted a formal application to participate in the inaugural parade celebrating the inauguration of President-Elect Barack Obama. They are also performing at the "Big Shoulders Ball" on January 19.
But before they go, they need your help. The school needs money for new band uniforms, and transportation to Washington, D.C.
At least 120 uniforms are needed to fully outfit the band totaling $43,800. Travel costs for the trip to the Presidential Inauguration Heritage Music Festival are approximately $500 per student, including bus transportation to Washington, D.C., and housing. If the band is selected to play in the parade, 120 students will travel to Washington, D.C. The total cost for 120 students and their chaperones to travel to Washington, D.C. is approximately $60,000.
