Spanish Oratory Competition

Annual contest celebrates Chicago’s Latino culture

June 10, 2011

The Office of Language and Cultural Education (OLCE) sponsors the annual Spanish Oratory Competition to celebrate the richness and diversity of Chicago’s Latino culture, but more importantly, to recognize the talented students enrolled in the district’s Spanish bilingual education programs. All contestants are commended for their inspiring performances at all levels of the competition.

A total of 53 CPS students competed in the Spanish Poetry Oratory final competition last month at the National Museum of Mexican Art Opens in a new window icon, located in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. A panel of district and community educators judged contestants on delivery, stage presence, content interpretation, choreography and memorization of their selected poem. All contestants received a certificate of participation.

Fourteen students from the following schools participated in the individual category (Grades 2-8): Armstrong, Boone, Calmeca, Carson, McPherson, Orozco, Stevenson, Talcott, Volta and West Ridge. Five groups of students from the following schools competed in the choral category (Grades 5-8): Azuela, Calmeca, Carson, Shields and Stevenson.
