Beginning second semester, George B. Swift Elementary School students will be swimming laps in an 80 degree pool during gym class.
The school’s swimming pool recently underwent a complete renovation thanks to the pool’s new namesake, Alderman Mary Ann Smith. The pool, which was originally built as an addition to Swift in the 1930s, used to be a big component of the gym class curriculum.
“I felt, since the school is located two blocks from the lake that all children should have the opportunity to once again learn how to swim at school,” said Harlee Till, principal, Swift Elementary, 5900 N. Winthrop Ave.
The Mary Ann Smith Aquatic Center is open to the community during evenings and weekends. For more information, call (773) 534-2695.
