Louisa May Alcott, 2625 N. Orchard, kicked off its green team last month with a special celebration.
Planet Alcott, the school’s green initiatives program, teaches students and staff about how to support the environment through special green-themed projects such as an organic garden and a green audit.
Fun, green-focused activities took place during the party that included music, inflatable bouncers, a Chicago Youth Lacrosse Exposition (interactive demo), and a soccer clinic. Green education activities included an energy bike from the Peggy
Notebaert Nature Museum, two 20-minute “Ki” performances, and art and composting/planting projects. Green participants received passports and “Ki” stamps upon completion of each activity.
Planet Alcott is just one of the many programs at the school that focuses on healthy living. Alcott launched its healthy foods initiative in 2006-2007, followed by the Organic School Project in 2008-2009. Alcott launched its green team in the spring of 2009.
This year the school plans on undergoing a green audit, starting a new conservation club, and tending to its organic garden. The event supported the school's educational and green initiatives, while offering plenty of green fun for everyone.
Sponsors of the event included Wells Fargo – The Private Bank, Home Depot, Uncle Dan’s, Hinckley & Schmidt, and Greenlaces.org.
