Attendance counts

CPS emphasizes the importance of daily attendance.

September 18, 2009

Attendance throughout the school year is a key component of academic success.

Attendance enables academic improvement and enhancement. Each school day offers an opportunity for students to make academic progress and to interact with teachers and classmates. Frequent absences can cause students to fall behind in their studies, and miss out on valuable opportunities to connect with teachers and classmates.

It is important that all students are in school every day.  Parents are reminded to closely monitor their child’s school attendance.  Remember students may only be legitimately absent for the following reasons only:

  • Student illness
  • Death in the immediate family
  • Religious holiday
  • Family emergency
  • Circumstances causing reasonable concern to the parent for the student’s health or safety, or
  • Other situations beyond the control of the student, as determined by the principal.

Schools are required to contact and inform parents of a child’s absence from school, after every absence. This may be done by the automated calling system, a live call from the school, or a combination of the two.

The school staff may even follow up an absence with a home visit, at the discretion of the principal.  When your child is absent from school, a note briefly explaining the reason that the student was absent is required after every absence, even if you call the school.

The Parent Portal is now available to help parents be more informed about their child’s performance at school, including their daily attendance. You can register to receive email or text notifications when your child is absent, and you will be able to communicate directly with your child’s teachers, in case you have any questions. Contact your school for more information.

Recognizing the strong correlation between attendance and academic achievement, CPS rewards students who have excellent attendance records.  Many schools have developed their own attendance award programs to recognize and reward students who excel at attending school.

There is no question that attendance has a positive impact on the academic performance of students. It is important that students start the new school year off right and attend school every day.
