Get ready for back to school at the All-Star Classic Weekend, a 3-day event running from Aug. 21 – Aug. 23. The weekend will include a variety of events, focusing on education, athletics, social skills, and much, much more. Here’s a brief look at what to expect during the All-Star Classic.
This year’s Teen Summit takes place from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Aug. 21, at Malcolm X College, 1900 W. Van Buren. The event is free, however students must RSVP in advance to be able to attend.
Teens participate in a day of workshops, self expression and information sharing regarding topics such as conflict resolution, responsibility, high school to college transition, college preparation, financial literacy and living a healthy life. The event will also feature workshops on admission requirements, college applications, scholarships and collegiate life.
Health & Wellness fair
CPS, The Support Group, and the YMCA are hosting a special health and wellness fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 22 in the Malcolm X parking lot, 1900 W. Van Buren. Approximately 1,000 people are expected to attend the free event.
Immunizations will be provided. Exercise demonstrations, interactive family activities, healthy eating workshops, health screenings, face painting, and arts and crafts will also be featured.
C.L.A.S.C. basketball game
The second largest basketball game in the country, and the only NBA-sanctioned game ran by a not-for-profit, takes place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, at the United Center, 1901 W Madison St.
The C.L.A.S.C. basketball game will cost around $10 or more to attend. All ticket sales go to supporting the Support Group’s after-school youth programs.
More than 20 of the NBA’s finest will showcase their talents in front of a crowd with more than 12,000 people at the United Center in support of this fundraising initiative. Some of this year’s confirmed players are James Posey, Shannon Brown, Jannero Pargo, Luther Head, Bobby Simmons, Will Bynum, James Singleton, Dahntay Jones, and Steven Hunter.
Celebrity softball game
The All-Star Classic wraps up with a celebrity softball game at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, at the U.S. Steel Yard, 1 Stadium Plaza, Gary, IN. The cost to attend is $10, with money going to the Support Group’s after school youth programs. This year’s confirmed players include Juwan Howard, Jeff Sanders, Jannero Pargo and Charles Oakley. Approximately 6,000 people are expected to attend.
