Head start child development program 

Head Start is a child development program that provides services to preschool children and their families who have incomes at or below the Federal poverty level. Head Start has locations throughout the city in community-based organizations, private day care programs and Chicago Public Schools.

Overview

The Head Start child development program provides services for children with a focus on education, socio-emotional development, physical and mental health, and nutrition. The program includes a strong parent development component.

 

Curriculum

  • Recognize and identify letters in the alphabet
  • Learn new words through vocabulary review
  • Gain an appreciation of books

 

The program also provides curriculum designed to teach non-English speaking students English.

 

Attendance boundaries

None. Students across the city may apply.

3-4

Full-day, Half-day

Enrollment requirements

  • Children must be at least three years of age, but not yet five on or before September 1st of the current school year.
  • Families must reside within the City of Chicago.

 

Acceptance criteria

Proof of residency must be provided prior to completing an interest form.
