High schools

High school is an important time for a child to grow intellectually and personally. It also prepares them for college or a job during this critical transition period into adulthood. At CPS we strive to help students achieve their full potential and become productive members within their community. We strive for academic excellence while making school a fun environment to learn in. Every high school works to understand each child and create an environment where they will “flourish."

School types

Neighborhood
Neighborhood schools are your first option, since they generally serve students who live within a designated attendance boundary.

Additional options

		Career academy Students receive a college-preparatory curriculum and a career-focused education in different fields.

		Charter These schools are independently operated and not subject to the same state laws, district initiatives, and board policies as traditional public schools.

		Contract These schools are independently operated by a private entity under contract with the Board of Education. Contract schools are not subject to the same district initiatives and board policies as traditional public schools.

		Magnet Specializes in a specific subject area such as Montesorri, International Baccalaureate, math and science, humanities or dual language immersion.

			Military academy For students who wish to develop leadership and team-building skills as well as receive military training.

			Selective enrollment Designed to meet the needs of Chicago’s most academically-advanced students.

			Small These schools limit their student populations to 600. This provides a more intimate and personalized learning experience.

			Special education Provides individualized education.
