Overview
Supplemental Educational Services (SES) is a component of Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) as reauthorized by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. SES provides additional academic instruction, specifically in reading and math, outside of the regular school day to increase the academic achievement of students in low-performing schools.
SES is available to all low-income students (based on the free/reduced lunch standard) who attend a school that has not made adequate yearly progress for two consecutive years or more. Students receive this service at no cost to the parent/guardian or school.
SES programs are offered by private tutoring companies and the district. SES serves grades first to twelfth, and is also available to Special Education students and English Language Learners.
Goals
- Ensure that students increase their academic achievement
- Provide options to parents to help them ensure that their children receive a quality education
- Assist schools in need of improvement
Program benefits
- In 2008 -2009, students in the SES program demonstrated a significantly greater gain in both reading and math achievement compared to other low-income students attending the same schools that did not receive SES tutoring.
