Community School Programs

Overview

Community Schools provide academic and social enrichment for students and families. There are about 150 community schools in the CPS district. These schools have formed more than 400 partnerships with non-profit organizations across the city. Community schools offer a minimum of 12 hours per week of after school activities, including parent programming, health and social services. Most Community Schools have programming until 5 p.m. or 6 p.m., and many have Saturday and summer program offerings.

Goals

  • Transform and maintain selected public schools to become the centers of their communities, with campuses open mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends and into the summer

Program benefits

  • Job training courses are available for parents
  • Provide access to medical and dental care on site
  • Provide opportunity to take music and art lessons.
  • All out-of-school programs relate to and support the school’s academic program

Resources

Community Schools offers students and parents a variety of opportunities to learn beyond the classroom.  Visit the Coalition for Community Schools to learn more about the numerous tools and publications available.
